Delidding Devils Canyon

So I currently have a 3570k which i delidded and had fantastic results on temperatures. Was just a shame that the silicon lottery failed me here and I couldnt get a good OC without pumping a silly amount of volts into it.

As I have a Sabertooth Mark S on the way ill probably pick up a 4790k. Now the question is, has anyone delidded their devils canyon and had oustanding results from it?

I have a nice stock of some liquidpro waiting for usage :)

You can't, the IHS is soldered onto the top of the die. If you try to delid it you'll destroy it.

As far as I am aware it isn't, it has improved thermal compound and a thinner lid and a few other improvements which impact thermal performance.

DC will not perform much better delidded, the thermal performance gains are much more minimal and are not really worth the risk.

Wait what?

I'm reading some successfully delidding theirs and it did not show solder. I thought only the Haswell-E had solder between IHS and die.

It isn't soldered. It just has improved thermal compound. I would not recommend delidding though, the gains are not enough.

+1

A work friend of mine delids every CPU he gets and has done the same with his 4790K, The temp difference was like 4'c, Seriously not worth the risk of destroying your chip.

If you want better temps invest in a watercooling loop.

I'm already watercooling :)

Will have a 2pump 3 rad single loop in due time as per my desk build on here. I think since im going for broke I will still give it a try. Question im pondering is whether I go for TIM replacement with CLU and reattach the IHS with silicone, or go for full naked "ivy" method using the EK naked IVY mount I have.

Of course, if I screw it up then I only have myself to blame. But where is the world with no risk?

I always use the vice method which is safer than razor blades. But as per your post, this is what I wanted. Temperature results from others who have tried it.

Each to their own I guess. I've delidded every generation from ivy onwards including the 4790K. Intel have done a good job with the TIM on DC and it's not worth invalidating the warranty. 20C on previous generations was. Also I've always found the razer method to be far safer than the vice method...

You know what,

You could be right. Perhaps I am being a little too impulsive. Think ill try keeping the IHS, maybe lapped with some CLU. If Im stuck with a bad overclocker the whole process would be pointless anyway.

But yes I had a 19C improvement on my Ivy core. I can always go ahead with delidding further down the line if there is indeed a point in trying.

As for the razor. You are talking to Captain Fingerslice here. Razorblades and I don't mix well. ;)

Hehe fair enough. If the danger you were talking about was to your fingers then I understand lol.

Sounds like a sensible plan with the delidding. My 4790k is sitting on about 1.22v and never sees 65C (that's the non delidded version).

And what Clock did you manage to achieve with that temp/volt threshold?

Do you know.when you might recive this? Ive ordered to off O/C, ETA was 2nd Dec, but thats now changed to 9th!!

No idea, all they confirmed to me was that my order was amoung the first batch so I would definately receive it when it comes in.

I hope its not delayed like the HOF cards or im screwed. Im flying to the UK for Xmas only for 1 week before im back in Norway. Im depending on the mobo arriving by the 23rd or I will be pissed!

I refuse to pay silly import tax if my brother has to mail it to me, nor do I feel safe with the courier.
