Why don't you just setup a samba share (basically a fileshare) with a password? That would be much simpler and lightweight than running a fullblown webserver

Samba is Linux's equivalent to Windows Shares (CIFS).

I've also come across a 'Network Drive' essentially a sata drive in an enclosure with LAN interface (just plugs into a router / switch ) and wallah a shared network drive.
