Crucial M4 update

Hi, I see that they recommend I backup my files before updating my SSD. I really don't feel like doing that and having the risk of needing to reinstall windows and so forth so is there any likely chance that i'll lose my data or is it just for disclaiming purposes? In other words, have firmware updates ever messed anyone around before?

Normally the firmware update will go smoothly but if the update is interrupted for some reason, power cut etc, then you will lose all data on the drive. So yes, it's mainly for disclaiming purposes.
