If you're comfortable with it, and especially if you had some armaflex tape (can get it at any refrigeration shop) you could just cut off the shrinktube, and pull back the insulation far enough to attch the probe, and just get it as far up the neck as you can.
Means taping the wire on the outside of the suction line, but it's better than replacing the whole insulation piping.
Will be as accurate as you need it to be.
You CAN just push the insulation back in as best you can and tape gently on the foam, and tight to the plastic neck, but armaflex is a nicer, and more trustworthy solution, as it adds a little insulation as well. Just be gentle and you should be fine.
Other than that, when you tape the wiring onto the suction line into the unit, be gentle. If you crush it too much, you take the insulative properties away.
