Corsair AX860i & AX1200i

Hi,

I'm thinking about going for an AX1200i PSU (possibly an 860i). However I've got a conflict of info after spending a week intensely reading up on them all over the web.

Reviews give both the 1200i and the 860i great reviews, consistently pretty much everywhere. But, there's also numerous user reports of coil whine, issues with the Corsair Link software and complaints of fan spin up on start up, or ramping up and then down excessively as part of its cooling profile.

So just wondering if any of you have had exposure to these units and what your views are?

Cheers :)

What system will it be powering?

As far as I know, most of the reports of coil whine (and I've not seen many of them), Corsair has replaced the unit.

No idea about Corsair link though, that isn't something I'd personally use.

Only about 500w to 600w draw at the moment, but that might be increasing significantly in the future. Not really in need of advice from that perspective though, but thanks all the same. :)

I've got a few units I'm considering, but would like to opt for a Corsair (its replacing an aged HX1000w which has been great). But theres a few points mentioned above, holding me back.

Whilst its great that Corsair would replace the unit if faulty, I'm aware that there is a charge to ship it to the Netherlands and even then some users have replaced several units and remained "unlucky". From what I've pieced together over the past week or so, is that the higher percentage of issues seem to be around the 860i rather than the 1200i. But that might simply be down to volume of sales etc etc. I'm also aware that there could also be thousands of happy users out there - but the fact remains there are many who appear to have been unhappy when reading up on it.

The fans do spin on start up, its a max speed check. Youll get used to it its just part of them, I dont mind it at all now and it lasts just a few seconds.

Great, thanks for the feedback. I think I'd get used to that quite easily. I know in your review you said you'd be using the unit yourself, any other probs so far? No coil whine or system stability probs using the Corsair Link software?

Many of the user issues appear to be from a while ago. I'm hoping any issues have already been ironed out now.

Appreciate your input. Cheers. :)

I dont use the Link in orca TBH. Youll get bugs with most things, just depends on what you use it for. with a H100i Id use it for fans and led colour but for the psu its just a monitoring tool.

I think that's a good point. I'd likely only use it for the occasional check, rather than 24/7 anyway, so just launch it when needed.

Has it been silent in Orca under load?

I use an AX860i and as Tom says the fan does spin up momentarily. I must admit I can't detect any coil whine whatsoever. It's a real nice psu. :)

The fan spins up depending on what wattage it pulls and heat matey, the fan would accasionally spin a bit in the summer when rendering but its not loud. and quieter than some other PSU's Ive used.

I have not heard my fan at all until I was worried and turned it up to make sure it was working and had no coil while at half and max rpm. Thats with the 860i im assuming its the same with the 1200i

Cheers chaps. Oh that's nice. hmm.. sorry just literally done an o-ring mod on my mechanical keyboard and this is the first thing I've tried typing and its rather nice, I have to say

Anyway, sorry back on track. That's good to know - the 860 apparently has a better fan than the 860i, but similar, if smaller to my HX1000w and that's been all but silent through thick and thin over the past 4 to 5 years.

So, thanks guys, I'm probably going to go for one of the "i" 's. I'll just have a ponder over 860 or 1200 and what I'm planning in the future.

On a side note, you wont believe this. For the past week Amazon has had the 860i at £130!! And now literally just this morning, since last night when I last checked, they have upped the price to £155. You wouldn't Adam & Eve it, would you!

Could go for a Seasnoic 1000 watt PSU as well... No fan start up at turn on or rarely even throughout usage. Seasonic makes a lot of other companies PSUs as well.

Yeah I considered a couple of their units, but generally didn't like the cables and I can get the 1200i for a tiny bit cheaper. Good suggestion none the less though.

I also looked at a Fractal Newton, EVGA G2 1000w and an XFX unit or two as well. Would even consider a horrendously expensive Enermax too, but the cables just seem out of place for such a top tier unit (also found they aren't as quiet as you'd expect with one I had briefly years ago).

Trouble is though, that starts to whack the price up further. I did like the look of the Platinum 860w and above units and of course get great reviews. Tempting as it is, at the price those units are going for, I'd warm towards the 1200i personally I think.

I can never see the reason for a PSU over 1000watts these days. Everyone seems to forget that tech is getting LESS power hungry and not MORE power hungry
