Core i7 4790K OC help

Hi Guys,

So I am pretty new to this overclocking business... well a complete noob actually and this is my first OC and have been playing around with the settings in my ROG bios...

Anyway I have hit a 4.8Ghz OC at 1.250V and 48 multiplier. I have run a prime95 for 11 tests and it seems to be fine, my average temps are in the high 70s and at idle around high 30s.

Is this any good? have I hit the silicon lottery? Do I go for anymore? if so how? Do I try to keep the 4.8Ghz but lower the voltage, what do I do with BLCK frequency? Will this work as a 24/7 OC?

I have little knowledge as to what anything does in the bios apart from those things like the multiplier and voltage so any advice would be greatly appreciated or if someone could even link me a video that would be great!

Also RealTemp GT is reading one of my cores as like 6 or 7 degrees colder than the rest (when under load), and 2 or 3 at rest, should I be worried and did I muck up the thermal paste application?

Regards, Jasper!

Check out Tom's videos on ocing, here's one:

4.8GHz @ 1.25V seems like a very nice overclock, for how long did you leave prime95 running? For a 24/7 overclock I'd leave it run over night and check then if there were any issues.
You could also try out other stresstest tool like OCCT.

It's always nice to have a lower voltage (and therefore less heat), so lower it as long as it remains stable

Thank for your reply! Yeah I will give the video a watch and try to see if I can do the prime over night! Yeah ile try and get the voltage a tad lower if possible. What's the highest you should go for on the multiplier? Or what else should I be changing to get better clock speeds?

Thanks again, regards Jasper!

my 4770k hits a wall at 4.4 :/ dat bad thermal conduction. but 4.8 on 4790k at 1.25 sounds very good imo, but should be able to push 5ghz

That clock sounds very good. I've tried to get mine up aswell now. Bluescreened at 4,6 GHz at 1.2V, got it stable at 1.250V. Then I tried to up it to 4,7GHz with 1.250V, with multiplier at 47, but bluescreen after a couple of minutes of OCCT. The temps were 65-70. I'm gonna keep it at a nice stable clock on 4,5 at 1.2V for allround purpose.

It's almost Turbo speed, but when doing it that way the Vcore is set at like 1.275V, and that's just nasty.

Good luck with your overclock.

Thanks for all the replies guys, sounds like I have gotten very lucky with my chip...

I am going to keep trying today and maybe try get the volts a bit lower than 1.25 and see if it will go for 1.20, if that works I might try and go for a 5Ghz OC and see what happens lol.

Regards, Jasper.

So here is what I got this morning, 1.225v at 4.8Ghz, don't have time to test it properly but I hope it will.

I tried to get 1.2v earlier but it just blue screened immediately...

Regards, Jasper!
