Cooling an i7 in Lian Li PC-V351

Hey guys,

I can't really justify spending more money for water cooling in my build list I'm preparing, so am looking for a CPU fan instead but am having real trouble trying to work out the size of most of them.

Currently looking at a Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 with appropriate 1366 clip as a possibility as i dont think it's too big, but was wondering if anyone else can recommend a fan that would fit inside but still be pretty efficient, bearing in mind I'm not going to go CRAZY on the overclocking.

Btw it will be mounted on an Asus Rampage II Gene Intel X58 mATX motherboard.

Any suggestions would be invaluable.

The Zalman CNPS9500 that you are considering is actually bigger then you think. You defiantly need a heatsink like what Bloomerz suggested. something with a fan that faces upwards. I have had hands on with a XIGMATEK EP-CD901, Scythe SCSK-1100 I think the Scythe will fit your needs. You need to measure the distance between the psu and the cpu socket before you buy something...also check if there are build logs using that case you can see how they cool there processor.

After some research in other people's attempts to effectively cool their own high-end V351's, I've found that even without watercooling it's not that cheap and extra fans, as well as more mods than I'm willing to do to the mboard, are needed to keep temps within a stable range. I'm starting to think this may be a non-starter and may have to go for a midtower with a normal ATX mboard to get reasonable air cooled temps. I think I was dreaming a little on trying to make an ultra portable high-end pc without watercooling.

Yeah believe me man I love that V351, but the simple fact is the i7 runs hot and the stock cooling solutions or aftermarking cooling solutions that can fit into that form factor just plain suck. Your lucky in away because there has been a great number of great mid towers at reasonable prices that will work really well for your application.

I really like the sleek aluminium of Lian Li cases though they are some of the more expensive, but I'm not gonna start building until the summer when I have enough free time, so we'll see what happens by then - I've already seen a £10 drop in price on the i7 I want and a £40 drop on my ram so things are looking quite good.
