cool nf4 chipset passivly

hi.

the chipset fan starts to show its age and starts to be more noisy which i HATE so that one needs to be changed but thinking about putting on a zalman ZM-NB47J instead but wonder will it be enough to cool the chipset ?

have a 120mm sidefan but dont know if it will create enough circulation as it sits a bit to high to blow onto the heatsink.

the yellow circle is supposed to roughly show where the sidefan is but in reallity its 1-2cm more to the left and the underside is 11cm from the bottom of the motherboard.

or should i just go and buy me a new fan to replace the old one ?

run it through a fanmate2 and at 3000-3200rpm its completly silent.

is one of these on now, its my second fan in 3 years so they last a while.

do a simple airflow diagram for your pc

sounds simple but aint ;) but will try but wont look nice.

The passive cooler should be just fine. Lots of people use it to replace the horrible DFI stock cooler.

do you happen to know how good it works ?

not so keen on working on the limits.

EDIT:

btw i can always put a thermal probe on the heatsink, everything below 50celsius is ok ?

perhaps i should mention i sortof live in the stoneage ;) so most of the chipset coolers in the first link isnt around.

have yet to se a store with the silenx.

also some coolers wont fit as the chipset is almost beneth the gfx card.

another reason i prefer the zalman is i have one unused somewhere.

lol, key words... somewhere.

it should work fine. if not you can find a small fan and place it on it somehow.

one little try to show airflow.

ye i know its an unusual way to have 2 120mm fans blowing in and only the 80mm psu fan drawing air out but sofar it has given me the best temps regarding harddrives case and cpu temperature.

case temp is usually around 25-28 celsius at the top of the case.

acceptable psu fan speed is 900-3800rpm its usually around 1200-1300 so the psu likes the airflow too.

on this image you can also se antec's logo on the side of the case, its hole drilled through the metall so air can flow through them and its on both sides.

you do ask hard questions ;)

not exactly sure about dimensions but a zalman nb-47j will fit but might need a slight modification.

here is a picture of the motherboard i have without a gfx card.

i have no plans on going sli at current time so blocking secondary pcie is not a problem.

this is what i have on now, its the third motherboard i use this fan on and have worked good for 4 years, changed it out around 1.5years ago due to noise.

okey time for an update.

ripped out almost everything in the computer and then ripped off the active cooling i had and throw in the zalman and it fit fine, over 0.5cm clearance to the gfx card but can not run sli with it but not a problem.

glued a third party thermal sensor to the base of the heatsink and it has reported up to 58celsius atmost.

dont know how hot it was with the active cooling but was hot, burn marks on the copper.

going to buy a fan possibly 80mm and hotglue it to the bottom of the case and put it on lowlow speed which wont cause any noise but provide some more efficient cooling.
