Console SoCs to get die shrinks

It looks like the AMD SoCs in the PS4 and Xbox One are going 20nm in order to create lower cost versions of the consoles.

Read more on the consoles moving to 20nm here.

The interesting thing is about moving to a smaller node process is you can effectively get 2 options out of it. Either lower power consumotion or more performance. I can't find the article but i read that in the case of the Xbone and PS4 they would both get roughly a 20% reduction in power or they could get 20% more performance at the same power efficiency they currently have. Now obviously they won't get more power out of it(counter productive but for a reason) because that would anger fans around the world. They bought the console and a year later they came out with a smaller but faster version? It would be cool but its really only for dreamers..

Just thought i would share that with y'all:)

It will likely be a similar story to PS3 iterations. Lower power version released at a lower process node and if the chip allows it without a reduction in yield bump the CPU clock by .1GHz and a newer model hard drive if possible for slightly faster load times and tiny bump in performance.

They won't bump the performance. Causes to many issues when all the code is designed around everything being equal. They keep everything the same but shrink it down to prevent changing the circuitry and resulting in games not working since the code is designed around what it was in the first place. Besides they are more interested in high yields so they make more money:p

What is the current power consumption of PS4/One? I heard its high when left in standby mode, so I turn mine off.

I believe they pull 200 watts at the wall? Don't quote me on that but i'm pretty sure they said about 200watts from the wall. In standby it'll pull watts but it won't be that high. It won't overheat or anything

Forgive me for my slow mind, but as a customer still deciding when to buy an xbone, does this mean I should wait for the 20nm version? Any release date out there?

You shouldn't buy an Xbox One because it's not as powerful than the PS4. Just look at the latest release of COD: AW, doesn't run in Full HD and the PS4 does.

At this point we do not know when a newer version of the console will release, or price points. You are best of just looking for a good Christmas or black friday deal TBH, there definitely won't be a new version until well into 2015.

It probably won't happen until we get the slim versions of the console. I'm not sure what the gap between PS2 and PS2 Slim was, same for PS3 and PS3 Slim, if you can find out that'll be a good guess as to when we'll see them with 20nm I think.

Then why get it for console if your PC can run it better ;)

It'd make sense to see what the xbone slim is going to be like. I'm getting one for Forza(s) and other exclusives.

I'm not sure if to buy AW yet but I also don't know if to buy it on PC or PS4. Just read the GPU test on Guru3D and apparently it runs great but there are times when theres a lot going on and it can drop the fps really really low.

I'm waiting for the One to NOT look like a VHS player! And even when they do I will still never get one. My next big purchase is going to be a PS4. The One (aside from its performance) is annoying. It has a fan IN the "EXTERNAL" power supply that whines.

It's unlikely you're going to see more powerful versions of the consoles out of this. It certainly hasn't been that way throughout the last few generations.

They'll just go for improved power, should result in smaller versions of the bone or ps4. Think the slim-line version of ye olden days.

People keep forgetting to include Halo in the calculation, which basicly means instant-win...;)

I was about to wait for the "After Christmas sale", but since I'm usually very picky on what to buy and when, I'd hate if there was an improved Xbone released a few weeks after! But if there's no clues about an upcoming release in the near-time I'll get the current Xbone when I get a good deal on it!
