So my sister has gone to Uni so I thought I’ll have a look about on her computer: D

But for some reason if there are any USB devices plugged in then the computer wont boot it just says memory test but nothing happens

How bizarre!

I was hoping u`d say u`r g15 as there are a few issues along those lines.

I`m assuming u`r sister isn`t some1 who drops into the bios on a regular basis - as I`d assume that the crappy keyboard and mouse are what she uses and hence she hasn`t messed with the USB settings there-in.

Does it boot with a ps2 keyboard in ? (forget the mouse for a min, atleast u could get in and mess about)

Can`t answer that, my initial thought is to check that the bios is open to legacy usb devices - if it can do that.

My other thought is that prehaps u`r trying to instigate the bios on boot up and are mashing the del button to get in - usb devices will submit bad info to (particularly older) motherboards and even if u manage to get into the bios, u lose control of the keyboard when u`r in there - reset being the only option. In these cases u press del once or 2ce when it says on the screen and sit back until it`s invoked the bios menu - then u can use the keyboard.

If u`r mashing - it`s hit/miss if it`ll give u control, otherwize I have no idea >.< other than to ps2 it ?!?!

I think he maybe refering to a usb flash/thumb drive that would be taking boot priority or locking the bios up.

U can get a small little device that plugs into a usb port (particularly if u`r going away and u know `some1` might go on u`r pc ;) ) that confuzes the pc on startup. Maybe a bit techy for her ?

If this is one of my pcs, I`m trying the ps2 option only - if this boots fine, I`ll know it`s how the bios is handling the usb.

I had an ASUS KV8 that wouldn`t setup windo$e with a g15 plugged in, I had to go ps2, get installed - then I remembered the USB onboard options of keyboard/mouse for legacy, then I could get into the bios with the g15 (windo$e still wouldn`t install) - no lights or anything, but it got in and worked in dos. Worked fine from there on in.

If all usb options in the bios are tried with no success, I`m then looking that prehaps the bios save of the settings is screwy and I reset them to basic and set them all again, save then try.

lol no she wouldnt do that i'm not even going to check she is a girl lol

lmao

i had the exact same problem on my old DFI board, one of the USB ports, i narrowed it down to one of the ones near the pci slots and then just made sure that it was never occupied whilst booting. the device in that slot was a bluetooth dongle thingy. never figured out why though.....

Strangely enough I get that on the machine I'm using now (Win98)

It won't POST beyond the memory test. Just sits there winkin at me. When I pull the plug on the 4 port USB hub, away she goes.

With my AMD XP rig I could never get the damn thing to boot when the front USB ports were connected to the mobo headers. Just seems that USB has always had these little niggles that nobody solved, I s'pose.
