Come on AMD; It's time to talk about RDNA 2 and Next-Generation Radeon

Pretty self-explanatory why they can't?

They have customers who are using it. Those customers, being Sony, haven't released any info.

Therefore they can't talk about it. They can't announce the details of the architecture features before their customers have as in this case their buyers are direct competitors in the same market.

Outside of that, we learned hardly anything about RDNA2. 12 TFLOPs. Who cares? It doesn't mean anything as we discussed yesterday.

On top of that, it is entirely possible RDNA2 won't have RT support but the Series X could have a dedicated die for those computations. Unlikely, but plausible. It would be bad if they didn't but doesn't mean they won't.

AMD won't discuss the configurations and specs of their customer's products. That doesn't mean that they themselves cannot talk about their own RDNA 2 products. It's their product, not Sony's or Microsoft's.

The new consoles cannot stop AMD from talking about its own products. That would be stupid. They will never talk about the specs of either console or any of the secret sauce hidden underneath, but that doesn't mean that they can't announce their own products or talk about RDNA 2.

We will almost certainly hear about RDNA 2 during AMD's Investors Day. If not, AMD has missed a vital opportunity. With the next-gen consoles delivering this level of performance at a rumoured $500, AMD really needs to play its cards right on PC.

You're assuming that the die Sony will be using will be different than AMDs or MS. It's not stupid. You don't know the contract details. No one knows the specs of each specific die. They could all be the same for all we know. Even if not they could be lawfully obligated to not say anything.

For all we know it could be launching end of Summer. That's 7 months in advance. To far for a reveal

RTG - talk crap about your crap stuff and say nothing about your good stuff, apart from Polaris.

Navi is ok. I'd love to say great but the drivers stink. And this is becoming a recurring theme with AMD GPUs.

Maybe it's because they're putting too much focus into the consoles? IDK, but yeah I won't be touching them ever again until I can be certain of no issues or close to none.

It's a shame, because for ages they got it right whilst Nvidia made a pig's ear of it but that's really changed.

5600XT launch was shady, 5700 and XT mounting issues and black screens.

Yeah, no thanks.

Replace consoles with Apple drivers.

RTG was talking crap about their own stuff? Definitely missed that one

Crap as in BS. You know? Lying.

Like the time they showed a Vega 64 next to a Titan XP with no data but "it's nice".

Vega is everything but nice. Worst GPU I've ever had. Undervolt? I had to underclock it just to stop it crashing.

Getting reamed by nvidia

Why give away your secrets to nvidia before you need to,... would just be helping the competition out giving away details too early. I expect amd might take a performance lead, nvidia will drop their prices a few days after rdna2 releases then within a month or so will release their latest xx80 product to take back the high end performance lead. If an entire New generation PS5 and xbox release at $500, could we expect the chip they use to release to the pc crowd at the same price point? If AMD crams twice the silicon into their high performance cards there is a bit of scope in between to leave nvidia guessing till launch day

AMD discussed Zen 2 long before it came to market, several quarters before. All AMD needs to do with an announcement is to lay down some basic details, leave full specifications for later.

It is common for AMD to reveal an architecture at one event and wait to talk about product reveals for another. AMD needs to put gamers on notice and give people a reason to "wait for RDNA 2".

As it stands, I can see a lot of PC gamers contemplating a move to Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 for a while, especially with today's GPU pricing.

fair few YT peeps talking about this, it's not beyond possible but Idk tbh and if true it will be very expensive :D

like all things until I have seen it and someone has benched and reviewed a tech item then I don't get my hopes up too much, too old for hype trains.

If we don't hear anything at GDC if it even still go's ahead, then E3 time frame maybe, but tbh the sooner the better.

I've also heard 550w being thrown about.

HBM though? No thanks. Massive price poor return for gamers.

I bet they're gonna do another LOL GPU like Vega 7.

Okay I'm just not sure how I would have gathered that from your post. It was confusing... Sorry

TBH, this GPU looks like a Radeon Instinct card, a successor to 7nm Navi. Not a gaming card.

I hope that AMD won't repeat the mess that was the Radeon VII. While the 16GB of VRAM was useful for niche applications, the GPU was largely irrelevant within a few months when Navi launched.

It's just something that came up in my general searches Idk but I'd agree it's more like the instinct than a general gaming card but it could just be totally false.

I'm waiting for details prices and such from both companys to decide what to upgrade my 970 SLI from so in saving mode now, but I know one thing I won't touch sli of cfx ever again that side of the market has pretty much died.

So looking for a decent upper range card might cost me a chunk thou but wouldn't buy the current cards when so close to the next set.

The longer they leave it to get them out the more I'll have saved but they need to be priced well even thou raytracing is a must I don't mind which brand and if the current cards plummet in price then I wouldn't rule out a current 2080S or ti but I would prefer the newer cards if they live upto any of the current rumours.

For me it's a card that will last me a few generations so don't mind spending a chunk.

For gaming yes. Though for compute tasks it is faster. Much faster than Navi. That was the downfall of GCN and Navi. GCN was equally focused on compute/gaming whereas Navi is solely focused on gaming. Games in real world is not an equal split of graphic/compute tasks. Was a good architecture but not for the application it was in. On the other hand Navi is far more efficient at gaming and therefore can have significantly more efficiency at the cost of lower compute performance. Though that's perfectly fine because it doesn't need that performance.

Nothing sucks more than buying tech to find the next day something faster and cheaper is about to be released

The console SOCs are Sony's and MS designs and products, made under license using AMDs tech. If you look at the current console chips they carry no AMD branding

AMD confirmed last year that rDNA V2 will have RT Raytracing acceleration

Just to throw it out there.
Its also possible that the products are not performing the way AMD expected (could be over or under performing). With MS and Sony as stated previously, its their designs so if it doesn't do exactly what they want, its not AMD's issue but on their own product stack its all on them. We must remember that planned this year is Intel's own range of GPU's and the rumours on next gen Nvidia cards are rife with massive uplifts in performance and AMD may be preparing for either or both of these.

They're behind and trying to compete. Or rather they're trying to get top dollar for a load of tosh.

The Vega 64 was very good at 1350mhz. Well no, it was hot and loud but it worked ok. Performance was underwhelming though.

Every time I tried to take it over that clock it crashed. Or black screened. If I turned the bios switch from silent to performance it pink screened. In other words it was simply too hot and power hungry to even work at the clocks advertised (or rather dreamed up by RTG). However as many others have noticed it's ok at 1350mhz.

However it's slow, and certainly not worth the asking price of £500+ at launch.

Drop it to 1200mhz with a 1350 boost, position it correctly in the market place and fair enough. I'd have had a lot more respect. But in essence the card was a catfish. A total catfish.

They keep doing it over and over. Navi shouldn't be as fast as it is and in reality it's not. Not if you want it stable and sub 70'. 90+ is not acceptable and it never was. Not for Fermi, not for the 290 and 290x and not for any other GPU since.

Yet they tell you it's fine so they can "up position" their cards and the bottom line their worth.

The RX 480 and 470 were their best cards in years because they were nothing more or less than they promised and priced accordingly. Some say they were boring but I respect honesty and Raja was nothing but honest (even though he's supposed to be a total egomaniac).

4850 wasn't as fast as a gtx 260.
4870 and 90 weren't as fast as a gtx 280 or 285.

But, at £130 and £180 respectively they didn't need to be.

5000 series very impressive at launch, then £50 price hike across the board when Nvidia didn't retaliate.

It's just tarnish. Tarnish one never forgets unless he or she is stupid.

Well, regarding their media strategy since Lisa Su they've always preferred to drip-feed info to keep in the headlines constantly rather than give us everything all at once, I mean, with these console launches and the feature drops, they don't even have to release anything to get journalists (and us) talking about RDNA2.

Though it's also worth remembering that they're going to be ramping up more products for the end of this year than possibly ever before(At least 2013 anyway), with both consoles, presumably Zen3 CPUs, and presumably this new line of RDNA2 GPUs all set to come in the last half of the year on 7nm+, RDNA1 details were held till only a few months before the 5700's launch iirc.
