COD4 problems with gfx card.

hi all, newbie here, apologies if this sort of thing has been asked before, but im really frustrated with my laptop at the mo. i cant get a decent looking smooth game on COD4.

i have a dell xps m1710, 2.14ghz dual core processor, 4gb ram(i know only 3gb visible), nvidia geforce go7900gtx card, and a screen with native resolution of 1920x1200.

even if i turn all the graphics/texture settings on cod4 right down to low or off, including changing picmup settings to 3(lowest quality), i cannot get a smooth game. i have had to set my screen to 800x600, and cap fps at 60, although game will then use 67.

my sound card causes some problems, its not up to the task and causes a slight stall when the voice comms messages are played, but surely i should be able to get a visually better game online with my spec laptop?

cooling is all good, sat on an open desk, ive tried cleaning the laptop out, no joy.

any resolution higher than 800x600(to be honest, i just cant see at 800x600) causes the game to drop to 15-20 fps frequently, hang there, then get back to normal. while it does that drop, my ping goes to 100+ from 45ish...

does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? this laptop/gfx card, as mentioned above, should be able to do better, but why cant it? drivers are up to date.

Hmm, my laptop is worse specs than that and i'm on 1440x900 i think with everything on medium 2xAA. Or something similar.

What direct X are you on?

Update drivers/find some cracked drivers. these can sometimes be great at making your card run much better.

Are you on Vista? I'm guessing not if its only registering 3GB of RAM.

I'd say turn off all unwanted programs and processes, but you shouldn;;t need to with that spec PC.

cheers for the response. im on XP, DirectX 9.0c, and cant update it any further, ive tried.

i already turn off every other program before launching cod4, and have removed unwanted processes etc with tuneup utilities 2007.

my gfx drivers are the latest forceware from nvidia, 84.63 for my card.

Again, i'm wanting to recommend trying older versions, but you shouldn't have to.

Try reinstalling DX9.0c. Or even the game.

A defrag might help a bit, but i doubt it.

Sorry, i'm at a bit of a loss.

well cheers for the help, ive tried dxdiag, no problems shown, may try reinstalling the game. are there any particular config commands that may be causing me trouble/may possibly help?

my laptop tells me a defrag isnt needed, and i believe it, hdd was only upgraded a few months ago.

back everything up and reformat?

is your graphics card overclocked? trying putting it back to stock settings..

brooksie, reformat is a bit drastic...the hdd is recent (aug 07) and i wouldnt know how to overclock my gfx card!

toxcity, i know desktops are better, but with pseudonym saying at the start of this thread that his laptop is of lower spec and runs it fine at medium settings, im a bit baffled.

That is what confused me too. Laptops may not be as good, but they can still do a fair bit.

And CoD4 on medium should be easy for a mobile 7900. Sorry that I can't help much.
