CM 212 Evo killed mobo?

Hello all,

Does anyone have any experience with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo causing damage to their motherboard?

I just installed a hyper 212 evo on my asrock p67 extreme 6 and now the board refuses to post or even display anything on the monitor at all.

I followed the instructions to the letter and even checked each part to make sure all of the insulating stickers are present.

I've reseated the cooler several times tried booting the board both inside and outside of the case. And with minimal components attached.

Some times when you attempt to power the rig up the fans spin and stop, other times they stay on and you can hear the hard drive seeking constantly but with a blank screen.

The troubleshooting LED screen on the corner of the board no longer lights up either.

I've tried clearing the CMOS with the button on the back, I've tried the stock cooler it doesn't help either.

Am I correct to assume the board is now dead?

I noticed a few reviews when I purchased it on newegg that damage had occurred but figured that it could have been due to installation error and didn't think anything of it.

Is this common with this cooler or just bad luck?

Have you checked the CPU pins aren't bent or damaged? Made sure you have all the power connections plugged into the board (8 pin power and 24pin) and is the CPU fan installed?

When you are reinstalling the fan, are you also cleaning and reapplying the thermal paste?

The CPU pins are fine, all power connections are plugged in, and the blade master fan has been plugged into the 4pin CPU fan header.

I cleaned the CPU with 91% iso alcohol (Was careful not to get any in the socket or on the mobo). And I am using NT-H1.

The thing that made me really suspect the board is dead is that the LED screen on the bottom right corner never displays anything anymore.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the rig was previously working before I installed the hyper 212 evo.

Check you haven't inadvertantly knocked the heatspreader loose or the mounting system has bent the board crooked which might be causing the pins not to contact due to a bow.

also make sure ya didnt flip the switch on the back of the psu

also check the rear mount and make sure it hasnt contacted any circuitry on the back.

The backplate has its plastic like sticker on the parts that touch the board so I don't think that would do anything?

I guess it may be possible that the board bent slightly but it doesn't appear bent when I set it on a table.

If the board wasn't dead but something was wrong with the CPU wouldn't I get a error code on the LED screen on the corner?

Edit: switch was in the proper position on the PSU (Its a Corsair GS800).

ok lets go back to basics then I'm sure you already have but cant hurt to try again. I'd remove everything and reseat it again. checking every single connection. even trying the old hsf even removing the cpu from the socket and giving it a good looking over to make sure no bent pins or even missing pins. do this with it unplugged from wall and remove the battery from the mobo. and please report back as soon as ya can.

I'm pretty sure at this point the board is toast and I accidentally broke a sata port because of the locking cable, the tabs just wouldn't let go.

So I'm just going to toss the cooler and get a new board, I no longer trust the cooler and don't want to damage the new board.

Thanks everyone for your help!

what board are we talking about??? where ya located??? just asking in case ur close to me or someone who can test it for ya. Would involve ya shipping it to someone but its just a thought.

Sorry for the really really late reply.

Thanks for the offer but its toast so I replaced it with a new asus board.

Couldn't be happier with it.

Did not want to risk trying it. I'm using the stock cooler for now and will get a NH-D14 later on when I grab a new case. My current case doesn't seem to fit many coolers the 212 cooler hit my side panel on my NZXT source 210. The website states 160mm max cooler height and the 212 cooler was 159mm... I figured it should fit but apparently not.

In any case my problem is solved thanks everyone for your help!
