Change psu fans

not really wrath. I was trying to explain in laymen terms what the difference between Current and Voltage is. ohms law doesn't really explain what they actually do within a circuit.

Ohm's law explains how they mathematically relate and given you know 2 of the values you can work out the third using ohms law.

I spent years studying this crap..... electrician by trade.




All it takes its 0.33A directly across the heart to cause cardiac arrest if you have a weak ticker!


My advice. If you don't know what your playing with don't play with it.

or

alternatively use tools don't touch anything with your hands just to be on the safe side.

A battery 1.5v @ 0.33A Would obvieusly not cause cardiac arrest, i would not feel anything

A car battery with 300 amps @ 12v would not casue serious harm, because of the low voltage and skin resistance.

yea due to our natural skin resistance but go put a dead short on a car battery..... some are able to crank 400A in dead short conditions.

No this is at 230V. Normal every day power. I think Europe and Aus fall into line now with a 230V standard. Sorry I'm used to everyone talking 240V lol habbit.

i know here in Aus we have 230-250V @10A......... enough to kill you 30x over at every power point lol.
 
the thing with a psu is those caps hold a rediculous amount of electricity. they are and arent like batteries.
they are like batteries in the sense that they store power. but they arent like batteries because if they are given the chance they will release ALL that energy at once.

a psu that has not been disscharged can give you a very powerfull shock. it really dosent matter if you think its only 12v.
thats at the output between the input and the out put are chokes transistors inductor coils. resistors caps and all sorts to regulate it.
if you get one of those caps discharging directly in to you You WILL know about it.
The bigger the cap the more it can store. and in a psu they are usually in seriese so they store a Lot more than you may expect.

Believe me. i have had small psu's "2 molex 1x at connector" 30w jobbys discharge theire cps in to me. and it hurts.
I have also been hit by 240v from a ceiling rose thanx to a constant live circuit which should have been ground in my parents house..
(once that happend i had them get the whole house re wired. it simply wasnt safe, i later found out that it had been done by my father and grandfather. and my father hasnt got a clue about what hes doing or how it should work, which also explains why the cold water tap would occasional electrocute you.)

Honestly i couldnt tell you which hurt the most. but with the 240v celing rose it was a contsnt and and would keep zapping you indefinatly.
with the psu's They zap you with everything they have for just a second.
either way i would not recomend either of those as a nice relaxing thing to do.

The psu that is apart in my photos actually has a soldered fan wires.

Looks ghetto but thanks I will look at mine and if it looks dangerous I will wait till I have the money to replace it

Tbf mate, considering you're getting a completely new rig in a few weeks (?), I'd say it isn't worth it if you're not sure what you're doing.

I'd be looking at a temporary solution. What kind of PSU unit do you have? The kind with the fan for bottom (or top) intake or the kind with a rear exhaust?

If the fan gives up you could always use an emergency solution like simply putting another fan on top of it, on the outside of the PSU (not having to open the unit up). Just connect it to the motherboard or a molex connector and mount it to the unit with something like cable ties or even double sided tape.
 
like i said a few posts ago.
disconnect the psu from the wall. then try to power on your pc a few times. this should help discharge most of the caps.
then leave it connected to the pc for 5-10 mins just to be on the safe side. (remember dont connect the pcu back to the wall power at all)
try to power on the pc again..

Then you can Probably work on it with less chance of a painful zap..

still need to be careful though. who knows what tricky little cap decided not to be used because the pc didnt fully power on.
But honestly the psu should have tried to power it on and used all its stored up energy trying to do that.

please dont just randomly tape up wires like in the pics earlier.
its probably not going to cause an issue. but if anything would cause an issue. its doing a job like that..

only takes 10-15 seconds to solder those wires together and 5 seconds after that to heat up a shrink tube on top of it.
much safer then.

I don't know the brand. Top-placed psu. Saterday the cpu over heated (got a warning) but I played from friday till early Saterday without putting the pc off during the day. I have in the front an intake and at the back a exhaust.
Thank you, but will that stop the noise because if I feel the psu its cooled air coming out the back? (noise is my problem)

I will unplug the psu the previous night and before I open it i'll the power up thing you talking about, and see how it look.

I will cut the fan wire and use Feronix idea of connecting a some what external fan
 
Good thing you decided on installing the external fan :)

Remember that if you're ever going to solder, you should always do it under supervision of an adult and wear eye protection and all: I once almost got an soldering iron in my eye at school when some kid turned around really wild with the thing in his hands.

LOL I'm 18 now:p. And that's why I work alone because since I can remember every time I got sore it wasn't my fault. But I have my partner in crime (Daddy)
