Hey guys and gals! Just asking for advice on painting the mesh and other parts of my case. Im looking to paint i blue but i am just not entirely sure on the process i need to go through. I have watched some videos and seen threads where people talk about primer and stuff? anyone give me a short explanation?

Thanks TicTac

on my recent paint mod all I did was rough it a little with a scotch brite pad noting to serious and made sure it was clean and degreased after roughing it up a tad wipe it down with a good non petrolium based cleaner I use alcohol (rubbing) and paint in several light coats where ya see the color of old part slowly changing between coats. Allow about 30-60 mins between coats. Its a lenghty process but done right will look superb

imho priming just adds to time it takes and is a waste if proper prep work is done before hand.

Get etch primer as it eat`s into the surface of the panel, dont worry it will not destroy it

Wet & Dry 600 grit you can buy it cheap from ebay.

How to prep.

Wash panel in hot soapy water to remove grease and dust.

Then fresh hot soapy water with 600grit sand the panel till you can see mark`s on it.

Wash again with soapy water and then use a cloth to dry the panel, you can use a old t-shirt

leave to air dry for a few hours.

Spray the primer keep the can about 30cm away from the panel and do a light coat, dont try and cover it in one go as you may get run`s.

Leave to dry for about 15mins then repeat.

Best to leave the panel to dry over nite and then use the 600grit again to key the surface for the top coat.

Wash again, cloth dry and leave for a few hours.

Topcoat is the same as primer light coats with 15 mins between to dry until your happy.

No one mentioned not to paint on a day that's either wet or high humidity, Because if you don't have the parts super dry you can get condensation drops form inbetween each coat, Then it bubbles and rusts on the case Or just plain flakes off, I know because it happened to me once apon a time

(not on alu though)

this is true Nattie but round these parts if'n ya wait fer a non humid day you'll never get it done lol. But seriously cleaning the parts is good to make sure no greasey finger ptints or such is on it but sanding with soapy water is well something new to me lol you can wet sand if ya want to but clean clear water is fine no need to add soap lol. Now I have been painting cases for many many years and I have never primed or sanded to bare metal. most paint applied by case manu's is very well adhered to the metal. So basically all ya need is to lightly ruff the paint so your new paint has something to adhere to. Also doing several light coats will aide in this as well. Applying paint heavily lessens adherence as well as having the adverse effect of running or another thing called orange peel both of which are unsightly.

The reason I recommend wiping the parts with alcohol is alcohol evaporates quickly and without residue that will mar the surface, another reason not to use water lol, you can as I said wet sand but allow ample time for parts to dry thoroughly before painting.

Been doing it my way for over 15 years and never had any problem`s,maybe i dont know what im taliking about?

I'm Quite lucky, If i need a case painting one of my dear friends owns and runs a Car body repair shop, So i can drop my case off with him and he sandblasts the case for me paints it and bakes the paint, They do airbrushing as well, but i've not had one done for afew years, No point

Edit: I see them at the body shop sanding with soapy RO water it's quite a common thing if they're spraying a highend car, But they normally only use soapy water on primer, Then just go dry sand per coat lightly just to make the paint stick, Then they lacquer the final coat of paint, Mirror finish, They did my range rover when i hit post

you'll never tell.
