Case fan speed control: PS, sensor fans or Vantec controller?

My foray into power supply solutions for a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI has led me down many unexpected paths. In arriving at my final choice, a OCZ 520W 1 rail 33A w/-5 rail for Soundblaster on K8N, a side question arose on whether the lack of a case fan speed controller (not PS fan) on the OCZ power supply is a disadvantage. Antec for example promotes that it's PS controls the speed for up to 3 case fans.

Thread responses indicated it's best not to have the PS do that but go with a fan controller such as Vantec. However, this has now raised the following questions:

1. The Antec approach seems to be automatic....that is, sensors detected when to slow down or speed up the fans

2. The Vantec approach appears to be manual....you dial in the speed you want which suggests you're always fiddling with the controls depending on load

3. Some case fans come with sensors built in to control fan speed depending on temp

The net is, isn't the best solution one that automatically controls fan speed? Given that having the PS do that is not efficient, is the remaining alternative #3....buy a bunch of sensor based case fans.

I can't see the merits of the Vantec manual approach, so I may be missing something here

Regards, Ron

you will find that your psu wil automatically control its own fan speed anyway, but not your case fans. for this you buy a fan controller and many brand names ones such as the aerocool gatewatch can be setup to change your fan speed automatically. cehck the reviews section for a revierw on it.

the reason some fan controllers dont have this feature is that most hardcor eoverclockers/modifyers prfer to have conplete control over thr system, and prefer to do it manually.

Blimye this agreeing with Dave malarky keeps happening! Yep - Aerocool Gatewatch seem to be the best option for you - automatic and manual fan control for both 3 and 4 pins fans! :)

I just picked up an Aerocool card reader/fan controller/temp monitor/audio/usb/sata front panel thingy mabob and I must say that they're complete morons.... They make all of the plugs for the card reader etc EXTERNAL usb plugs instead of interal to hook to the mobo, what a bunch of fucking tards!!! Who the hell wants to run cables out to back of there case and plug em into the rear USB ports? No one that I know. I'm still in amazement. The greatest part about the panel is the two external sata ports it adds, rofl, what the hell would u use those for??? lol The give you some nice long 2" SATA cables too  You might be able reach the cables to ur SATA ports on the mobo if u found a way to fit this thing into a shuttle! lol

Ok, end of rant.

And don't forget that you have to give your CPU a quick test!! :)

I think what I'll do is put the DFI in to one of my spare cases and put the Diego on it real quick with the XP-90 and my Fortron PSU and see if the mobo unlocks the power of the proc... If it does I'll be pissed because at that point I dont think I will have enough time to cancel the ebay auction and I'll be forced to sell the proccy even if its good. I just dont see that happening though, I can almost guarantee its a bad oc'er.

Good thinking Batman!! You could just tell the buyer that only the motherboard is for sale as the proc git run over a a passing steam-roller ;)
