can't get i7 to 4ghz :(

i tried unplugging the mouse, keyboard, webcam and the printer and for some odd reason it got stuck on the windows logo now -.- the pc still booted cause the monitor on the keyboard got initialized.

Now i tried reseating the ram and gpu and it booted normally. i'll see how it goes.

setting the ram to 1N seems to do the trick, booted about 7 times now and no problems at all.

guys, yesterday I started having the same issue again, only this time even if I restart it doesn't boot, I have to hold the power switch until it does a hard shut down and power it on again until I get an overclock failed error. I kicked the vcore up a notch to see if that was the case but I got the same error this morning, any ideas?

is it against the rules to post after each other but with a couple days gap?
I know it's double(actually triple lol) posting but if I edit my previous post I don't know if the thread will show up in the recent threads part, so yeah if it's against the rules I'm deeply sorry.

Edit: is it possible that with an oc, you must leave the pc plug on for a couple of seconds before powering it on. I figured the capacitors may need to charge or something like that. I usually power it on immediately but now i tried waiting about 5 seconds and booted normally.

Doubt it with the whole capacitor thing, they should charge almost instantly I would have thought.

Before you said you didn't see any point in upping the V-Core since it would add more heat. The reason I suggested that is because the system is clearly unstable otherwise it would have passed the Prime95 test.

BTW are all your fans and the pump running at full blast? I.E. do you have any automatic fan speed settings on in the bios? If you do then I would suggest you turn them off since it will help with the temps and overall stability of the system

yes all fans are running on the psu so theyre at 12v (although i need to get 7v resistors) and the pump is running on the cpu fan header but i'm pretty sure its at 12v and not being controlled.

I just kicked up the vcore to 1.29325 and I will run prime95 for a good 6 hours to make sure.

Edit: for some reason it freezed after 45 minutes. I am pretty sure I had run it for more than 2 hours before at lower volts. well, I upped the vcore to 1.3 now and running prime again

another update: upped the vcore to 1.3 and ran prime95 for 5 hours no errors. I will probably leave it as is if no more problems arise. max temps where 76-76-75-77

Glad to hear that the extra bump in volts stabilized things a bit for you

I would also just double check to make sure that it is giving it all the power it needs, just in case

I'm not sure if Ivy runs hotter than the bloomfields but a 3570K @ 4.6GHz got a delta temp of 50c with 1.24v. I'm pretty sure they do run hotter than bloomfields but don't quote me on that.

Goddamit so pissed right now, so apperently it can take 5 hours of prime95 but it still cannot boot properly, I'm this close |<>| to set it back to stock. I don't know what else to do

What speed is the ram set at for 4GHz/200FSB Should be at 1600MHz I.e. 8x multiplier so that you don't run into any ram issues. Also what is the uncore running at?

Just want to make sure that there isn't anything else here causing the instability.

Did you have a look at the pump speed btw?

I'm not 100% convinced with the temps truth be told. I got low 80's with my titan fenrir when I was running at 4.2GHz on this CPU. You should be well over 10c lower than me considering the cooler you're using.

Just checked the bios, q-fan is disabled and the temperature is a tad high probably because I'm using stock nzxt fans that came with the Switch 810 for aesthetic reasons.

I'm using the stock thermal paste that came with the h110, I have owned it for a couple of weeks

I tightened the block diagonally as supposed to. I will try lowering the ich and report back.

EDIT: Kinda reviving an old thread but after buying a 2nd gtx580, getting the cpu to 4ghz before it gets here had become an important mission.

I think I am almost stable, just had a config survive through intel burn test with almost 5gb of memory abd crashing within 20 mins of prime so I bumped the qpi up a notch and I am currently testing again, I will post settings once I go stable.

As always I have a question (or two ). Is hyperthreading really useful when gaming ? I don't do much rendering these days so if I can drop the temps from low 80's to mid 70's would be great.

And do you suggest that I turn on speedstep once i get it stable to avoid letting it run at 4ghz all the time?

yep it just crashed after 90 mins on prime, so I turned HT off, dropped qpi to 1.3 and currently running prime again, its about a 10c drop on average

This is the exact reason that until the announcement of the next-gen consoles, we always recommend i5s over i7s for gaming cause they were cheaper and had the same performance.

Hyperthreading is not as quick as a full, physical core anyway and most games that are out at this very moment don't even know how to use more than 4 cores.

I completely understand your argument but if I were buying a system today, I'd still go for a 4770k over a 4670k just because if I do something I'll do it right, and having an i7 sounds better than an i5 tbh.
