Can you take a look over my chosen parts please

I've been researching parts for quite a while now and this is the best i could come up with. I have about a £1.4k spending budget but I will be looking to upgrade in the future.

Mobo: Asus Rampage III Extreme

Psu: Corsair 1000w HX

Cpu: Intel Core i7 950

RAM: OCZ 6GB 1600mhz platinum CL6

GPU: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6970

Case: Either the Obsidian 800d or the HAF X

Are these good parts to be putting together? Any recommendations to what i could change?

I will be wanting to overclock too.

Yeah have you checked out any reviews on the 2500k? It performs great, and at a great price point. It might be worth a look. But those parts look good either way

How much do you think they will cost in USD and do you need a new type of mobo to support them?

I'm not 100% as they don't go on sale for a few days. I think some people were saying the 9th. But it looks like the i5 2500k will come in a little over $200 usd. You will need a 1155 socket motherboard, which i'm not sure of the prices yet either. As like always there will be mainstream types and enthusiast boards. But watch the review video the chip looks boss for the price.

I saw the reviews of the sandy bridge, i was impressed however will it benefit me at all? Is the performance significantly better then the i7 950?

Not only does it perform better than the 950 in most cases at stock speeds...it can overclock like crazy on air. And the over clocking looks exceedingly easier. Oh yeah and it will be a lot cheaper than the 950. If you really want to spend 300 dollars on a cpu...then I'd look at that 2600k. But I guess ultimately it depends on what you plan to use your pc for.

+1

Gaming wise, the i5 2500k seems like all you need, however for better performance you would go for a i7 2600k, but either way you are making a really good choice of cpu. Personally I don't think AMD can match the sandy bridge.

Majority of games won't use up all the threads that hyper threading provides, so the i5 2500K is probably the go to CPU for gaming. Also 4 legit threads should be faster than 4 threads that are hyper threaded

Also with the case HAF X over the 800D, the airflow in the 800D is...well no existant, while the HAF X is high air flow, and you'll see lower temps with all your components especially with the graphics cards.

Also for the RAM I'm not too sure about the OCZ RAM. Personally I would look at Mushkin, they have really solid memory.

Mobo: Asus Rampage III Extreme - good but could always just go with the sabertooth and save money

Psu: Corsair 1000w HX - its good but its a bit of an overkill a 750 or 850w of corsair will do

Cpu: Intel Core i7 950 - good cpu

RAM: OCZ 6GB 1600mhz platinum CL6 - go for the mushkin range they are very good

GPU: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6970 - have a look at the gtx580 or 570 too as you get all the bonus stuff such as physx

Case: Either the Obsidian 800d or the HAF X - your choice mainly but 800d is meant to be crap for airflow, have a look at the bitfenix collosus or the nzxt phantom as well

don't forget you need a good heatsink too to overclock so a noctua nh-d14 would do you good

and also maybe an ssd if you haven't got one already

I forbid you buying a CPU till after AMD's bulldoser is out and 'benched' forget the i5's etc mate as others have said SB is the way to go if you specifically want Intel. Use an Intel card with an Intel chip surely?

all the best

I'm not sure. He's probably talking about the intel x58 NB with an intel cpu? But thats usually the case anyway lol. Dont wait for bulldozer, Snag the 2500k with a P67 mobo when they are out! And start gaming! Thats what id do
