Can you make money using Threadripper for mining?

Not bad. Not as profitable as GPUs but the fact that it can just brute force it's way through with so many threads is pretty impressive. I wonder how Intels 16/18C CPUs would fair in these tests too.

I wonder if its worth the time to throw an old FX cpu at mining lol, hell if it pays for the power it uses it might be lol. The woes of only having old midrange hardware to screw around with means I completely missed out on the mining craze lol.

Not that well, cache is the issue here. Even Intel's 18-core has less l3 cache than the 1950X. CryptoNight needs 2MB per instance, making Threadripper's extra cache a huge factor.

Nope, 8MB of cache over 8 cores, so only 4 instances can run well. Then there is electricity to consider and the lower IPC.

The aim of the game is to earn more than the power you use costs.

How much did AMD pay for this advert?

This isn't an advert. AMD wanted to talk to us about it, I took the call, told them to sell me the idea of CPU mining and I did the required math.

The basic just of it is that AMD users with a Ryzen CPU with a 2MB cache to core ratio could earn a little money on the side this way, provided they want to gamble the electricity costs on the crypto market. While GPUs are scarce people could use their Ryzen (mostly Threadripper) CPUs to earn a little extra cash with their cache.

It goes without saying that no cash changed hands here, we were under no obligation to write anything based on the information AMD gave us.

I understand that you may have intended your comment as a joke, but in a written format it can also be read as an accusation.

Not an accusation but an observation. It literally reads like an advert and genuinely looks like AMD are stooping low enough to get miners buying TR.

Just like when they allowed some dude to play with a Vega FE as long as he gave no specifics and said it was not discernable from a Titan XP.

Which as we know turned out to be a load of crap.

Really? Low blow even for you dude. Calling one our own esteemed users a sellout?
He's part of the reason OC3D is more known than ever because of his news articles. He's been an amazing part of this family.

This article was very Mark and appreciated. Next to no information and this was really interesting to find how diverse blockchain technology is. I appreciate the article.

I find the article insulting. I didn't call him a sellout, I said it looks like an advert and reads like an advert.

But yeah, I actually find it terribly insulting. See, it's gamers and enthusiasts who got AMD where they are today. It was us who kept them alive when Intel and Nvidia were smashing them to bits.

Today I went looking for an upgrade for my GTX 950. I couldn't find one. Why? because of mining. I then log onto one of my favourite websites for gaming, tech talk and fellow enthusiasts and what do I see? AMD talking about how TR are good for mining.

So today I had £300 in my pocket wanting to spend every penny on a new GPU. However, because the prices are so outright disgusting I could not do it. So I am going to have to make do with a GTX 950 when using that rig.

If this is how it is? and AMD really love mining that much? fair play. I will never buy another one of their products ever again.

If AMD are not reading this do feel free to pass my posts on to them.

You are missing the point entirely if you think this is about getting miners to buy Threadripper, there is not enough ROI for that. Nobody in their right mind would buy a Threadripper to just mine.

The point here is that Threadripper users (and to a lesser extent Ryzen users) can use their processors to mine and perhaps generate a little money for themselves. Not enough to pay for a Threadripper anytime soon but enough to help them get that extra game in a month or buy that RGB fan they want.

Yeah, AMD's marketing has been way off in the past, but the reason that I picked this up is because there are genuinely people who game on their PCs when they can and outside of gaming use their systems to mine. While I don't like mining it is undeniable that some money can be made here.

Let me give you a hint, dude. As a tech enthusiast and life long lover of gaming I really don't want to log on to my favourite site and seeing stuff like this. I don't find it interesting it boils my p**s.

Mining is destroying PC gaming and pushing people to consoles. I don't find that funny or interesting or anything else other than insulting. We've been completely ditched and screwed over for the love of money.

Nobody forced you to read it.

No, but some one made it front page news on a website about overclocking, enthusiasm and gaming.

Just goes to show that two of today's headlines have been about mining. Wanna know why? because there is nothing else going on ATM in the PC gaming world.

It's that rubbish that even tech sites are talking about it. It's like sitting down with a cup of tea and talking about the bloke who screwed your wife.

While I do agree that Cryptomining is ruining the PC gaming market, I cannot let industry or gamer politics dictate the information that we talk about here.

Any form of news writing is not about telling people what they want to hear, it is about getting information out there in the simplest (understandable) and most honest way we can. In this case, I got to speak to AMD's Damien Triolet and he had a lot of interesting things to say and I decided to convey this information to OC3D's readers.

I don't like the way the mining craze has affected the gaming market, and I understand if you didn't like this piece, but it any of my fellow gamers use this information and get a little extra income then all power to them. People won't buy Threadripper systems over this, but some may be able to make some extra cash and buy a new game each month this remains viable, that is what this piece is about.

PC hardware is about more than gaming, and PC enthusiasm extends beyond making new systems and achieving higher framerates. That is why we have a dedicated Blender Benchmark in our CPU reviews and also why we talk about mining. You may not like every use of PC hardware, but somebody is enthusiastic about it.

Cryptocurrency mining is an innovative use of PC technology. While you may not be happy with it being talked about in the tech press it would be wrong for us to ignore it. If we ignored interesting things that you can do with PC hardware, we would no longer be OC3D.

The more information you spread the more stupid people get it into their heads they will become a rich man.

I heard that TR wasn't selling so well. So you will have to excuse my anger for AMD pulling the most obvious trick they can. "Hey, quick, mention that TR mines !".

As for mining? it is the cancer of PC gaming and is destroying it. Eating it from the inside out. Hence I don't really want to read about it any more because I've had more than enough.

Sorry man, but you've been duped. If AMD really don't understand why PC gamers would be sick of hearing about mining then they really are thick. But no, we'll just call up Mark, get him to slap an article all about it over the front page just to rub some more salt in the wounds.

It just shows how desperately out of touch AMD really are. Maybe they should actually go and read some forums instead of making phone calls to talk about mining.

I really thought it was just RTG who were totally out of touch and stupid.

BTW. The odd hint of blowing smoke up the ass of a PC gamer every six months by saying "We love our gamers really (but make special bioses for our cards for mining on...)" won't work.

Assuming the prices never changed, it would take 27 months for a 1950x system with the cheapest GPU (a Geforce GT 710 @ $39AUD) to pay for its self BEFORE the cost of electricity is taken into account. All things considered, you should never ever buy a Threadripper for the express purpose of crypto-mining as will be obsolete for mining long before it pays for its self... :\

ROI times are just so high in a market that's son unstable, it's just not worth the investment.

I think this is more about more casual mining, just when the system isn't in use. It's AMD trying to further justify their threadripper pricing to prosumers
