Can I put dead 8800's to any good use?

Hi there.
I have 2 dead cards: (well, not actually bricked - overheated and show image with artifacts) MSI NX8800GTS and Sparkle 8800GT. About 3 month ago I was going to try to reball one of them in the oven, but after reading through some reball-related threads/google'ing realized that it's not worth the efforts. But another idea fascinate me, inspired by handcrafted articles from old/dead hdds - holographic clocks and various figurines. And I wonder - can I do something similar made of my cards - any ideas??
 
How about some links or images for us to see what it is your referring too. You have completely lost me..
 
I can tell you by my own experience,I "baked" so many 8800's in the oven and fixed each and every one of them.It works 100%.Strip it,clean it,bake it at 200C (chip facing upwards so it doesnt fall of when solder gets heated),turn the oven off after 9 minutes and open it,but leave the GPU to sit inside so it cools of gradually.After its cool,put some paste on it,put everything back together,and voila,as good as new.
 
LOL I also had a dead 8800gt and after a failed attempt at bakery, I ended up taking the GPU off and drilling a hole in the corner to make a keyring :D

Also got an Athlon 3500+ on my keys in the same manner :)

Arh I see now. :) sort of like mini versions of the sculptures that TTL has, I like these, although I tend to just bin my scrap.

Well, it's not about the success of reballing or the fact that I've read MANY times people says chip making process before 2008 was defective by itself (bga frame history...). The main reason why I declide the baking idea (besides the cards is ooold) is...here is an example:
I baked - it's workin fine - lasts for e.g. 4 months - suddenly died again - (have to have spare one in stock) - switch to a working one - delete old drivers - clean - install new drivers for a new card - tweak driver settings as I usually do - "enjoy". Hope you got my point(sorry for my bad english, hope it's not as bad as I think ^_^)

I feel you bro,I had many 8800 GPUS and I had artifact problems with each and every one of those.Baking them is temporary solution,but if you got a new card like you said,dump the old one.I cant wait to get rid of my current GTX280.Its summer,and this thing adds at least 10 c to room temperature :D
 
If I were to order Hydrochloric acid and Hydrogen Peroxide in any form MI5 would be kicking my door down within minutes, but I get what your saying.. no longer shall I throw out scrap.
 
i have some where in the region of 100, 8-10gb hard disks from my xbox modding lol.
never going to do anything with them. But i cant just throw them out either.
tried to sell them on ebay once but the postage is rediculous that was when i only had like 60 of them a box full of hard disks weigh a ton!
I cant really sell them now because i haven't unlocked most of them due to they never sold the 1st time. it also takes ages to unlock them via serial programer and telenet because you can only do 1 at a time.
atleast the ones you can firmware flash you can do 4 at once but thats still 5 mins for 4 drive..
and the western digitals have to be unlocked with a aster wd password which isnt that bad, but that takes about 25 mins because it has to format the drive and if you dont let it do that it wont unlock.

even thought of striping them down and just selling the magnets. but i dont have the time for stuff like that.

So i guess they will live here forever and keep accumulating lol

the idea is to melt the solder under the chip so the fissures and cracks in the solder flow back together.
sometimes works sometimes dosent. if it does work its a temporary fix any way.

cards go through this at the factory too
