Hey Guy's and Girl's got some questions for you audiophiles out there.
My Onkyo TX-NR 636 is currently connected to my PC via optical cable and I cannot get Atmos to work and yes I have all the speakers, my rig description in my sig is accurate.
I have heard that DolbyHD, DTSMA, Atmos etc do not work with optical is this true or false?
I have also heard that you need HDMI to play said audio if this is so how to I get the sound from my PC to the receiver? is it via the Graphics card?
I have tried a look on google but the info is all over the shop, any help with this would be great as it's doing my head in :D
Also if my display is display port only can I run a DP cable to the monitor then HDMI to the Amp and would I then have sync issues?

id probably go for a DP splitter..
I think you can get them with dp+hdmi out.

as for synk isssues i doubt anything more than 1-2ms at the most.

yep the dp to monitor and hdmi to receiver works for me , with no sync issues .
but the graphics card thinks its a second monitor , if i disable it then i loose audio.

Thanks for the replies. rickyjb what you said sounds similar to a thread I found in another forum I found last night after posting here and they talk about the receiver being another monitor but it gets sound perfectly so I'm going to try it

Ok so I have it working after much swearing and frustration the sample I had to work from was from Windows 8 and 10 does thing differently naturally, You make it a second monitor and then activate it through Nvidia control panel then enable it in Windows then through sound panel and then you have DTSMA DolbyHD still no Atmos but one of the worse side effects is my monitor will no longer go to 144hz it stays at 60 due to the fact that to keep your mouse on the desired screen you need to duplicate them :( but the sound is glorious

TBH I'm thinking quite seriously on going back to optical as there's no point having this beautiful screen at 60hz and trying to get some PC 5.1 speakers and put my Atmos with my big screen so it's not wasted either

you could always use cru to tell windows that the splitter is the same hz / res as your main monitor..
i have used it in the past to force windows to detect 1050p monitors as 1080p..
and really shouldnt be an issue with a splitter. (atleast i cant see why it would be.) and it easy enough to change it back if it is.

I didn't use a splitter though And my monitor is at 2560x1440 the problem is it's 60hz not 144hz and it's really noticeable which really surprised me

what are you setting up as a secondary display?
CRU should be able to tell windows that whatever it is is 144hz.. if it is a monitor then you wouldnt be able to view anything on it as it would be out of range.. but if you dont care about seeing anything on that monitor then its not an issue..
just use cru and tell it the second monitor "or whatever you have set up as a second monitor" is 144hz and then that should work..

The way i understand you is..
you have a 144hz monitor you use. you set up a secondary display in windows. windows detects the secondary display as 60hz, so forces the 1st monitor to 60hz.
And thats why i think using CRU to force windows in to detecting the secondary display as 144hz would help.

Thanks shambles just found Custom Resolution Utility and will give it a go as it would be really nice to have an awesome picture with awesome sound :D
Lets just hope that telling the Onkyo that it's 144hz doesn't hurt the sound still nothing ventured nothing gained!

remember if you need to revert anything because you cant see when in windows, start in safe mode and you can see fine to undo changes

So tried the program and I can't seem to get it to 144 but I can to 120 which is more than good enough but strangely enough I cant do it with in the control panels BUT I can with the monitors switch which wouldn't work before so very happy

have you tried setting the second monitor above 144?? like 180 or 200 or something? that way the 144hz monitor would be the limitation and you may get full 144hz then.

No I haven't might give that a go although everything is working so nice now and what's 24hz when it's at home :P
And anyway it may be at it's most stable because it's a neat doubling of the amp's refresh rate which is 60hz
I thank you very much shambles1980 for all your help dude as everything is running awesome ATM and that CRU was a great tip
To all who replied my thanks
