Build log: OTD - 1000D

Well I said I make a build log, so here it is.

I have done a few in the past on this forum but I never finish them. This one considering its mammoth stature deserves a full build log. Due to its size I have so many thoughts going through my head that I don't know where to begin.

I will also be taking my time, using some parts I already have and slowly transitioning to the final product. What I have in mind is to utilise some nice mirror vinyl to show all the hidden beauty of GPU cards.

I won't be making a list of the components going in, or packages on their way until they arrive so I guess it can leave a little wonder as to what will be going inside.

So here she is. weighing in at 30kg, new contender and soon to be the heavyweight case of the world. The 1000D. I used to think the 900D was a monster but this is Godzilla.

Do you mean the SSD plate? If yes, that is the french doors they have designed to conceal bad cable management.

Not sure how many people have seen the videos floating around on the new flagship from Corsair, so I'll share a few more photos of the case itself.



Front side has a nice little shelf I think is great idea.

Potential to have a 240 Rad here. Quick test revealed that you cannot mount a 240 Rad from EK direct to the chassis as the Rad conflicts with the rail system above. How can however mount the fans to the chassis and have the radiator attached to the fans. Basically mounting the radiator in a pull configuration.

Backside HDD mounting cage. All of these will be removed.

Front side of HDD cage serves as a shelf for mounting pumps. Not sure I will go with this. Might remove the whole thing. Sadly the top part is removable with thumbscrews, but the cage itself is riveted to the chassis.

This crafty little simple screw is our lock for the removable fan trays that run on rails.

Once removed we can see the rails provided by default. At the moment I am not too happy that the top fan tray provided is 3x 140mm holes. Ideally I would have preferred 3x 120mm or 4x120mm. Until I get a replacement tray I cannot mount the extra radiator I had planned to go here.

Then of course we have the fan filters. Something again I am not too happy about. The Corsairs photoshopped product gives these filters the appearance of a firm good quality mesh. Here though, while the plastic tray is decent, the mesh itself appears "very" flimsy and not really tightly clamped. You can almost see in the photo the mesh appears to be very wavy from hex to hex

Top mesh however is much tighter. Showed no play or wave effect. Perhaps my front mesh is just a bad batch so to speak.

And of course, I needed some sweet memory to match the colour theme so far.
Picked up some nice Hyper X Predator 32gb 3200mhz

7700k of course cannot be left with its base clocks and has to be delidded, this chip is going to become stoic!

Figured might as well stock up on some TIM and do the same for the GPU like I always have done in the past.

One major gripe I have with this motherboard is the PSU connector. While everyone things its cool to have it at 90degrees which seems different to all others, it actually causes more problems than anything.

So yeah what I have found is that this motherboard PSU connector is so badly aligned with cases it is postioned midway between the two grommets of any case. You would need to train the cables and cannot hide them as easily as if the PSU connector was standard.

As you can see, I can't really stealthily have the PSU cable come from the backside and straight in. Also, interesting point to note. You can see I am using an Intel Cooler from the 3570k days. While the CPU is delidded, running Division on ultra temp only hit 73C with this puny thing. Look forward to seeing the temp under water.

Actually no, they wouldn't. They are often trained so they bend like a rainbow. Much easier when the PSU is standard. But when it is like this, they do not arc nicely. I already have braided cables and it's unsightly right now. MDPC-x cables are even harder to train them, they hold their shape beautifully which is what I have at the moment.

I'll figure something out but I guess this is why ASUS abandoned the 90degree psu connector on the newer boards.

Don't have much of the cooling components yet, but I can at least start test fitting some things. First up are the two 480 Radiators.

I have some EK Vardar fans spare from my old desk build which I can use while I wait for the ML120s to arrive. I actually have someone driving them from the local store to me on his way home. Also lying around was a 240 Rad also from an old build but was never used. I'm not good at flogging things on ebay etc

Downside to my apartment right now is that there is construction outside, and since its so warm I need to keep windows open. Sadly, all the dust comes flowing through like a wind tunnel. My items don't stay looking new for long <_<

Quick test fit on the front tray. I don't get why Corsair only provide 24 radiator screws. They should give 32 minimum. I didn't have enough to mount all 8 fans so had to be smart in how I did it.

The 1000D does not come with any 5.25 drive bays, which is nice but also a little awkward at the same time. I wanted to go back to using my Aquaaero which has been in its box for some time now. I think when I start trying out to do the mirror panelling, I will add this in and mount it to the back panel and see how it is. Either that or remove the LCD display and mount it somewhere concealed since I run the software from windows anyway.

As you I find that top 3*140 very inconvenient. As for now on the Corsair website we can buy a addictional 8*120 (same as the front one) but even their tech support don't know if those two are interchangeable... At the same time I can't find any info about that... What is quite funny because they mentioned if at the official reveal.

I can probably help you there, however it may work out costly. If, however, you want to go the route of "Having a mate in USA buy it and then send it at exact costs" I can probably swing something for you. Well, my friend and I between us can.

Problem with it is it's quite large, so the costs for postage may be considerably high.

So the ML fans came in or at least for phase 1.

Loaded them up to the fan tray and must admit, they look pretty good on it.
Sorry for the bad pictures. I'm not exactly experienced with taking good ones.

Decided to feed the front side fan cables over the rear ones so all cables come out the same side. Should keep things hidden nicely at the back when it comes to cable management.

I also had the idea to mount the small Swiftech fan hub to the back side of the radiator. Could have been an excellent way to keep cables concealed. Sadly, the 1000D gives you very little play room behind the radiators once you push the rails back in place. A fan hub which has the fan connectors laying flat or at 90 degrees would be fine. However these ones didnt fit.

One of the things I will be using from the previous build is are my pumps. I typically opted for 2 x MCP 35x with some EK pump tops on them. However some of you may remember I picked up a nice Swiftech pump top in the past which I never really got to use in a build. Downside is that it was the only one available and is white, so I need to change that.

This will allow me to save some fittings having both pumps combined instead of tubes and rotaries linking them both like I had previously on the EK pump tops.

The question now is what colour should I spray it. I'm thinking of going either with the same colours of the motherboard. I'll be having some fun with my airbrush set. Normally I want a nice smooth or glossy effect, but this time, I want to try to give it a little grain or powdery feel to it, with some mat colouring. Not sure how it will end up but I'll give it a go and see what happens. If it goes well, I'll spray the lower pump house too.

So few primer coats lightly placed with my airbrush. Really wish I had the Itawa Eclipse for better coverage. makes priming much faster and easier. Instead I was using a fine detail airbrush, a Sparmax 1000.

The Sparmax at least came in use here when it came to the colouring. I didn't mask anything but the top since I kept its original black. For the rest I just allowed the fine detailing to follow the contours of the pump top.

It isn't very clear here, but the top feeder section was done in Games workshop true silver, with some added airbrush thinner. Middle section was then done with a Gunmetal colouring, followed by black for the base. I let this dry in the sun while I happily watched Spain crash out of the world cup

Once the game ended I finished off the pump top with a Matt varnish. I sprayed in direct sunlight with the heat bearing down so the varnish started to dry mid air allowing it to settle with a powder like finish.

That will do for today. I'm still limited to what I can do. I can however show the Bitspower package I ordered some time ago but have not had a chance to utilise yet.
