BT Broadband to Offer 20Mbps for Free

Might be tempting... still not sure what ISP I am going to go for for this flat, but doubtlessly the price is still fairly hefty, so I take it to get the 20mb you have to be on there 8mb or so, which was fairly pricey IIRC

Yay we might all get around 8 meg now instead of around 5.5.

Still going slow compared to other less developed and less financially stable countries.:D

from what the gadget show looked into bt are the ONLY providers that dont throttle

Yeah right, my connection has barely been over 2MB for the last 2 weeks, with download speeds maxing out at 90-100kbp/s if i'm lucky (average is way below 50).

That cant find a problem on my line, i've switched routers, played about with different phone sockets and microfilters. It has to be them, but they wont admit it.

Just got my new O2 connection set up today as Sky had brought my actual connection down to 6mb when it used to be 10.

O2 reckoned I could get up to 17mb judging by my phone line but I'm getting actual speeds of 11mb download and 1.1mb upload with a ping of about 16ms to the maindenhead server on speedtest.net.

Still for what works out to be £8 a month along with a wireless N router thrown in, I am happy with that.

I'm on cable internet with VM here, 10mbit, it's bang on that and fast as hell most of the time, though does suffer some issues from every now and then. The major problem is the fair usage policy. I can't use the connection at it's capacity for more than an hour and a half to two hours in the daytime, otherwise it get's throttled to 2mbit for 5 hours. I find this pretty unacceptable for an 'unlimited download' contract.

Unfortunately, in a cable area they have a monopoly, and as I have no landline (i'm a student, no need), looks like i'll be staying with them.

You do realise that your lines might just be limited to 2MBps? In which case there is no throttling at all.

Anyway, on topic; 20Mbps, but with a 20GB limit? Wth?

It is them! I went from 120k to 7Mb when I got unbundled!

Key couple of words there "last 2 weeks".

virgin ftw

im on virgin 10 meg, like £8 a month if im correct, i rarely get limited now, even when i do it only go's to about 50% last time i got limited i was downloading all 25 of my steam games again,

also speed is while mates playing halo 3,

Yep Virgin Media FTW! I would love there new 50mb connection but can't really afford that. There is no limit at all on downloads/throttling or anything like that. The 20meg I have has throttling but no download limit. Never had the throttling kick in myself, you would have to download like 6 movies in one hour for it to I reckon... :o

im on VM 20mb at the moment and its blistering fast all the time, if i download around 4GB in around 1 hour i get limited but if you leave your computer on from 1am-12pm you dont get your downloads slashed

Lets get one thing straight. Virgin Media are the worst when it comes to traffic shaping.

I would be interested in a free upgrade but as everyone has already mentioned.. there must be a catch. Britian is no longer the land of freedom. We are losing freedoms all the time. The internet is one of the only remaining but sooner or later free speech on the net will be taken away. :(

On topic - if anyone gets this deal give us all some feedback! :)
