Broken components or stupidity ?

Hi everyone,

since today i have overclocked my i5 2500k with just using OC Genie II on my MSI Z77A-GD65 mainboard. I decided to oc it myself to save some energy and get the temps further down.

OC Genie II disabled all the power saving features, set the multiplier to 42 and set my CPU on 1.35V.

I want to be able to oc my CPU to 4Ghz because i really dont need much more cpu horsepower.
So the first thing i have done is reset all the bios settings by pressing the Clear Cmos button. Then i looked on how my cpu behaves at "stock" settings.
I loaded up Prime95 for half an hour to get some reference temps.
I then discovered with cpu-z that my cpu stays at 3.4Ghz during prime run and do not boost up to 3.7 like i expected it to do.

I check the bios and all power saving options are on (Intel c State, c1e,...).

Now i also expect my cpu to clock down at 1.6Ghz when idle.
Nope, nothing it stayed at at least 3.4 and sometimes boosted up to 3.5 or 3.6 when IDLE !

My bios settings:

I am confused like hell and not quite sure if my cpu or my mobo are somehow broken, or i am just too freaking stupid to see my mistake.

Any help and ideas are appreciated.

i had a z77a-g45 a few days ago and it overclocked like crap, couldn't get the 3570k over 4.2GHz. for your issue, it's kinda weird. try enabling "Adjust CPU Ratio in OS", might do the trick.

I am sure just just lost in the silicon valley lottery. Sorry for that mate.

I enabled it but now my cpu stays at 3,7Ghz no matter what i do. Even on prime it dows not clock down like it did before.

the cpu ratio is at auto, set it manually and see what happens.

Done. Now my cpu does not change the clock speed at all. No matter what i do always 3.3Ghz if i set the multi on 33.
Also tried set the multi on 16 -> always 1.6 Ghz (prime and idle)

i don't really get why you want it to change, is the power bill too high? :P try contacting the MSI support, if i haven't missed out on anything as well you have all the power saving options enabled.

It would be nice to save some energy and also reduce the amount of heat generated by the cpu. Because i only have a small room in my commune it tends to get pretty warm in here after a while. And i am too lazy to open up the window all the time :D But it is not crutial.

I just thought if my system supports it, why not just use it.

it really should, most mainboard do that by default. that's why you maybe should contact the MSI support.

Ok,use search in the windows start menu and write power options, open it and make sure that its on balanced mode.this should drop down the voltage and clock speeds when idle.if not, wait for msi response

In case you didn't know, you need to use the + and - keys to raise and lower things on the MSI bios. I have my 3570k clocked to 4.5 GHz with a G45.

WOW, thanks man that really did the trick. It is working now :)
