Now we NEEED quad core i3s, six core i5s, and 6 core with HT i7s for the mainstream platform.

Sadly that is unlikely for the foreseeable future.

Intel have NO competition, which means no reason to waste money on expensive research and development.

They also believe that in the way applications are still written, a more efficient HT quad core will cut it.

In short, Intel are starting to rip off consumers and lie. The i7 6700k was £350 on release, where as sand and ivy were around £230 - £240 respectively. They go so much anger and hate about the 6700k price (which is a glorified Haswell chip with DDR4 and m.2) that they lowered it not even a month after release to £250

Glad you don't need a new socket for it. I'm sure it will be overkill for most situations but man it sounds like it's going to be a performer.

*opens wallet. Cries.

Well I suspect gamers will buy this in heaps even though no game will take advantage of that many cores/threads.. but if you are streaming/gaming/rendering like some people do then it would be absolutely amazing at that:)

Just one note - it IS wccftech we're talking about here. There often is substance to some of these rumors, but I'd like to see it come from a more credible source before I'd believe it since they've been wrong on countless occasions before.

Still though, 10 cores & 20 threads would be something new and cool for those on X99.

Ffs Intel I only just made it to the i7 quad core table.

Me too, with my 6700k. :p

I don't use the cores much but they are nice to have when you do need them. What I'm hoping for with this release is that the 8 core will cost around £500. They usually do the top end chip for about £800, then the one down for £530 and so on. If that's the case (and I'm pretty sure it will be because they have no competition so can't really up their prices that much or people simply won't buy) then I will definitely be in the market.

They really need to hurry and get the prices right with this. If they don't ? then Zen will absolutely clean up next year. As I said, if the 8 core is out of reach for me you can bet your backside I will be all over the 8 core Zen next year that will be less than £500.

If it is a wee take then I'm just going to stick with my 5820k and Intel will lose out to AMD next year.

BTW going back to cores quickly. I have an 8 core 16 thread Ivybridge ES chip that only clocks to 2ghz. Get it threading? it outperforms a 4.2ghz 4670k by over double. It's nuts really.

I can remember not a long time ago the similar argument when I bought my Q6600 quad core.

Haha! :p

As much as I hope you're right, it's waaaay too early to be making those kind of predictions. Zen's performance is still ultimately, an unknown at this point.

No it isn't. AMD have made numerous statements that claim it is X% better than Steamroller which basically brings it right around Haswell E levels.

So Broadwell E needs to be faster than that, otherwise all of those people still rocking X58 rigs who have been sitting on the fence waiting to upgrade will dive on Zen instead because I would bet my buttocks it will be considerably cheaper than any of Intel's offerings.

Normally I would take this all with a pinch of salt but not when Jim Keller is (or was) involved.
