Breaking News - Samsung's Galaxy Fold has Issues

Display is too small and comes with a notch in it, best to just buy a regular phone until this tech works properly with a decent size display.

These things are hilariously stupid. Phone makers must be getting desperate or something. And two grand? Jfc.

Personally I think 7" is a decent size for a mini-tablet. I've got a 5" hard limit on phones nowadays and that's a digression(Prefer closer to 4") due to the fact I'd have to spend way more to get anything decent smaller than that. I've owned 6" 18:9 phablets with no bezel and stuff(Chinese OEM), sure it's great for multimedia or to look at but small phones are just so much more practical for day to day use I ended up switching back after 6 months. To me the benefit of a foldable phone is that you can get the best of both of these worlds, and a phablet sized one would be kinda self defeating.

However, this launch is clearly rushed to beat Huawei to the punch, and seems to be an all round inferior product to their Mate X.

They are and you can tell by the way the market is splitting in different directions. You've got Huawei, Xiomi and Samsung all on the folding option thing, Nokia putting 5 cameras on one and apple and google just doing the same thing over and over and jacking up the prices. I heard Motorola were going to do a new smart Razar or something and Sony putting TV screens on theirs.
Not a single one of these knows what to do next and where the market is going.
Apple will put their prices up for the next release if that's the price of these I guarantee it.

Most of these companies (Apple, Google and Motorola/Lenovo in particular) have filed patents on foldable phones recently and indicated they've allocated a good chunk of research into them, I don't think any company doubts it will be a major market(Lots of people want large displays and small phones, it's why we have bezel-less and notched models), the questions are mostly a matter of when they think it will be viable, and eventually, when it can become mainstream.

When a company makes their first foldable phone seems to be whenever a company can afford to make one and expect to turn a profit at this point, the early adopter tax on this concept won't last forever, it should at least reach the extreme traditional end of the price spectrum over the next couple of generations.
