Black Screen of Death

Not seen this b4 myself.

Maybe it's a copy of when a mbp/g5 fails it'll sometimes leave u at a black screen ?!?!

Moral of the story: Never use Windows Update :)

A good firewall + antivirus will keep almost anything out (at least in my case) and just slipstream the latest service pack whenever you reinstall instead.

I cannot say how much I agree with Jim. Although I am even more anal about the AV/Firewall. But I only ever install Service Packs never Windows Update.

Did a lot about Firewalls today with college.. and it would seem having a firewall on the router (which most have at least packet filtering) is pretty much all you need. Obviously, you can have AVs if you want to be wasting your monies on the "scare stories". ;)

well, as im sure you two are more advanced users so doing that for yourself is fine. But for anyone reading this that isnt. Please please make sure you have a decent AV solution installed (also updated) and despite the issues some updates may cause, running windows update now and again is always a good idea. I'm almost certain is fixes more issues than it causes.

In summary..

If you:

A) Forward emails to your friends about the 'Valentines Day Card' virus.

B) Click on banner ads that say 'Your PC is Infected'.

C) Open emails from 'your bank' even though they don't know your email addy.

Then load your PC up to the hilt with updates/av/firewalls/spyware scaners but still accept the reality that you will eventually get infected. :p

TBH I run windows updates automatically and its no real big problem but then again I image my hard drive weekly so its pretty easy and quick for me to restore. Generally there isnt any problem with windows update as again I havent had the above black screen of death problem so its proably an update that doesnt agree with a certain device driver.

Generally you can get compatiability problems with any device driver just as easy as from windows update so imho your best bet is to be able to restore your o/s to a previous state both quickly and easily.

Prevention is better than cure but if you cant prevent everything its best to have the cure handy as well :)

Not sure wot there teaching in college these days but if u are on any type of network even if your behind several firewalls you would generally still have av's on the client machines. Packet filtering and all firewalls are only as good as they are configured and you still have the danger of someone plugging in an affected USB or other storage device which could compromise all machines that sit below the router.

I personally have both, at least that way if something does get past the packet filtering and the firewall I have something to warn me im infected, I can then just roll my machine back to a clean state in about 15 mins.

Its horses for courses in these kinda of scenario's but your best bet imho is to run an av and a decent backup soloution. You do not necessarily need to have a firewall on the client machine if you have one on the router but I would always personally recommend having an AV.

It all depends on the situation. For example, on my server everything is backed up onto tape at 1am Friday night. But on my Games/work I couldn't care less, even if I did get some crazy software I would just wipe and start again because anything important is on the server.

These two machines (or at least different revisions of them) have been running for 5 years now and have yet to get anything. I know them inside out so in my case I am the AV. :)

But I can understand more when it comes to companys with a spread of people some of which have no idea of how to be safe on a computer.

As you said, horses for course. ;)

Recently, I have been really impressed by how Microsoft address issues with it's software. They get so much stick but still carry on regardless.

Well, that's a byproduct of having a near global monopoly.
