BioShock is Game of the Year for 2007

I dunno man, Crysis kinda did that for me. I know you all still don't believe me (and I don't blame you) but even just watching it being played as it was meant to was absolutely mindblowing. The level of detail that went into that game just to give you the feeling of actually being there was stunning and really did its job. I really can't wait for my own upgrade so I can actually play it higher than High with 0xAA :p

Ah now, Crysis I`ve only seen played, not played myself. I didn`t want to subject it to my last game-pc. Present one will like it.

But I`ve got a whole back-list of stuff I been meaning to try out. Out of the bunch I wanna play Speedball 2. .... and I kinda don`t wanna try it - if u know what I mean. Been disappointed too many times.

We`re talking about 2007 mind, which can mean oct 2006 to oct 2007 of something stoopid.

Sounds a bit like it should win a best graphics award..... oh wait :p

Don't think that list is right to tell the truth..

or at least I don't agree with it.

And taking about NFS and DiRT, come on mate.. NFS has the most unrealistic handling around.

Anyone played the new NFS? Cars don't want to turn around a simple corner unless they are going below 30MPH. Which is totally shocking... I have seen cars in real life go around corners at 130. ;)

Lol iv always hated the NFS handling apart from the most wanted one. Burnout and Flatout series are my type of racing :p

lmao ya I know what u mean, scenary rushing past u so fast u don`t take too much notice of it - til u hit it.

Getting on a bit those games mind.

Heh, that arcade style will never die :)

This is exactly my point...both as bad as each other.

edit,

Just been poking around some reviews for arguments sake and typically it is being compared to the likes of excite truck for wii and motorstorm for ps3...both of which are not what you would call a "driving game".

What do you mean not a driving game? You press the go button and point the stick where you want to go! That's what driving is right? ;)

Sorry but i'm still not convinced by portal's 'breakthrough' yes you can put the portals in different places but its still very linear and very limited, you can't put a portal ANYwhere you want to you have limited places to put it which means all in all, its not an infinate amount of possibilities.

If the portal gun was in something like half life 2? Then yes, much more open and more fun to exploit.

Dont get me wrong i LOVED portal and yes i know its only concept and early days, but i wouldn't say it brought as much to the table as a title like crysis?

Volumetric shadows, advanced particle effects, directx 10 and the ability to use the nanosuit any-which-way you want right from the moment you take control, the levels are insanely massive with very few loading points considering the size of the scenery that to me is a pretty big step. Then add to that each of these massive levels has to be made as such that any and all of the nanosuit functions have a part to play from a number of different styles of play.

The massively destructive environment which has been missing from the half life 2 engine for SO long was amazing in crysis.

I'm sorry but portal didn't bring as much to the table for me as what crysis did in terms of 'breakthrough' if you compare the image quality of half life 2 engine games to crysis there is just no comparison.

Valve is patching odds and ends to their engine as they release new things not massive breakthrough's in technology, their physics engine is starting to feel dated and restricted in comparison to new titles and they haven't adopted anything new graphically for a long time now. I would have thought they would be hot on the heels of directX10 just like they were with 64 bit.

Crysis is one solid outright breakthrough package as a whole and i feel quite strongly it should have been top in breakthrough category.

Most of your points there relate to graphical breakthroughs, and Crysis has deservedly won the graphical award....

At the end of the day it is still a normal FPS, basically the old Farcry but with good physics and a nanosuit.

I agree with your point about the source engine though, it's about time they develop the next one.

So you're ignoring valid points about the engine and restrictiveness because it doesn't have shiny graphics?

Not quite sure what you mean. I thought Portal was truly innovative and I think it deserved it's award.

Crysis was almost "just another shooter" gameplay wise, but the graphics made it special and the nice addition of the suit made it stand out. But truly an innovative game? Not really.

Show the state of the industry, out of the many hundred offline & online games, can people list 10 - no make it easier 5 games that deserve an award for something ?

Even if the award is for the best game of the year "imo".

That is so very true ^

Of the games I've recent bought..

*Graphics Award*

Crysis.. Enjoyable but slightly underwhelming. Looks incredible, pushing technology to the limit and beyond.

After that, there's very little thats deserving of an award. Bioshock is a great game, but game of the year ?! Half Life was game of the year, the ultimate classic. Bioshock isn't in the same catergory. I appreciate its hard to keep churning out new material and groundbreaking ideas, but really there's not that much life left in the ideas that keep getting plugged.

The Wii however is probably the best path that anyway has taken, in that its giving you games with a novel and eventually tiresome new method of controlling them. But that was original. Wheres original in the First person shooter department?
