Best free Gaming Benchmark?

In an upcoming series of gaming benchmark threads I've got planned I want to get a synthetic score which represents an estimate of how powerful a system needs to be to run the game at certain settings.

For this I need a benchmark which is reliable, repeatable and free (so that anyone can compare their own score or see the benefit of upgrading based on reviewed/listed results).

So far I've come up with 3D mark 11 but the free edition only has the performance preset available which is a 720p test and I will be testing games at 1080p. Does anyone think that this could affect the results or have any suggestions for alternative software?

Unigine heaven benchmark?

I'm sure on 3D mark 11 you can change settings to 1080p?

That would be good if you could change the res but I thought that it was a fixed preset? I'll have a look again when I get home.

Yea I looked at unigine too but I think that only tests GPUs and I'm not sure whether the CPU will have much to do with the scores. I'd like a breakdown of the scores to make a better comparison if possible.
