AVX Offset Questions

Hi all

I have recently overclocked my 7700k to 4.8 ghz but have noticed that setting the avx offset option to 3 does really help temperatures.

I was under the impression that most games do not use "avx instructions" but it seems that for most of the games which I play for example battlefield one the cpu clock speed fluctuates between 4.8 and 4.5 meaning that the offset is obviously working but does this also mean that by enabling this I am not actually getting the full benefit of the overclock?

I don't have an understanding of the way in which these "avx instructions" work is it that a game can utilise both non avx and avx instructions which causes the clock to go up and down but you still get the benefit of the overclock for the non avx instructions?

I can't really find much on this out on the Internet but please link any relevant information as I'm sure there is an explanation somewhere!

Thanks!

when you are on the desktop doing nothing, are your CPU clocks static at 4.8 all of the time (use CPUZ and HWmonitor to keep an eye on them)

Hi Tom

Thanks for the reply, at the moment I am using the "Adaptive" mode so when I am on the desktop the clock speed is greatly reduced and moves up and down as more load is introduced when opening programs etc as would be expected.

I am guessing that using adaptive mode is not something which is really endorsed by yourself and the majority of experienced overclockers and that what you would say is that it is difficult to tell if the CPU is just downclocking when gaming due to this as the overclock is only applied under load when turbo boost is used?

Before setting the negative AVX offset when gaming the CPU was running at a constant 4.8 and that was also using adaptive mode.

Would you recommend returning to fixed voltage, with the same avx offset to see if the cpu continues to downlock in games which may or may not use avx?

Thanks

Thats whats happening in your game then - nothing to do with AVX
