ATI - well, maybe AMD,I suppose - is about to launch its latest X1900-class GPUs, including a chip capable of using GDDR 4 graphics memory.

The Radeon X1950 - as the new part is apparently dubbed - will ship in CrossFire and XTX versions, various websites claim. Both boards will support up to 512MB of GDDR 4 and contain 48 pixel shader engines and eight vertex shaders, as per past X1900-series GPUs. Core and memory clock speeds have yet to be set, it seems, but expect 650MHz and 1GHz (2GHz effective).

A lower-spec version, the X1950 Pro, may also be in the works. It is saidto run at 600MHz, with 700MHz (1.4GHz effective) memory. It has 36 pixel shaders, and is said to be scheduled to ship in October.

ATI has told its customers it's preparing a version of its Radeon X1900 XT-based reference card that ships with only 256MB of GDDR 3. The current design contains 512MB. Core and memory clock speeds will remain the same: 625MHz and 725MHz (1.45GHz effective), respectively.

The purchase of ATI by AMD is confirmed.

These clocks are impressive and the addition of DDR4 will add to the performance - especially in single card or in 2x 16xPCIE lanes.

A better choice for single card purely based on the fact that performance will count in all applications, not just those that are multi GPU friendly.

Given that G80 is pencilled in for a spetember release - is it a case of too little too late?

Release G80? LOL

I dont think it has much to worry about right now...the 7950 should be able to handle the X1950, and seeing as X1900XTX prices are still £350 here and the 7950 is £360-£400, ATis only real hope here is to slash prices.

Well nvidia purchasd the physicz house (Havok FX) that delveoped physix for HL2 befroe harware physix was available. Also - they purchased mobo chip make ULI so we shoudl see some good stuff come from that.

I think the biggest issue on that basis will be who will make ati chips - AMD or TSMC? TSMC are the current manufacurer of chips for Nvidia and ATI.

Finally Nvidia may have to open the door to SLI on Intel chipsets officially as I can see their current allianace with AMd coming to an end before AM3 goes live.

I think it will all be good for us as the tec will start to move even more quickly now, and prices should fall to entice the buying publicto which manufactuer they will go with, bring on the price wars thats what i say as it will be good for all.

i realy hope this merge makes all their prices drop even more, well ati havnt realy dropped lately but amd have oh well hope they drop even further :D

ATi Radeon X1950XTX Final Sample Pic

Well a new photo appeared on the web, it originates from HKEPC. This is obviously the Radeon X1950 XTX. And can I say that HiS technology won't be happy ? It looks very much like the cooling design as adopted by them which gave them a nice advantage over the competition.

In all fairness .. that is looking very sweet though. Nice design.

Driven by ATi R580+, ATI Radeon X1950XTX is the next trump card from ATi. Its model code and PCB version are 215BAABKA31FG and 102-A91501-00 respectively. Same as R580, it has 16 Pixel Shader pinelines, 48 Pixel Shader processors, and 8 Vertex Shader engine. Features at GDDR4 memory, it’s equipped with 512MB 2GHz DDR.

Sources indicated that ATi Radeon X1950 Crossfire is releasing on the same date with XTX version. Similar to the XTX version, the PCB version of the CrossFire version is 102-A98801-00. Both of them are available in late Aug. the final version of ATi Radeon X1950XTX is shown as below, the design of heat sink is a little bit different from those widely spread previously.

Anyone heard anything in way of a UK or even US release date for these cards?

I phoned ATI and they were really reluctant to tell me anything about it, however they said its 'prehaps' going to be out in the next '1-2 weeks' :D

Aswell they said its going to be in the 'same series as the X1900' just a 'a bit faster' and its on 80nm = more overclockable :p

I really want to get this card, and lots of places are saying a mid/end of August. It would be great to try and knock some of the 7950's off the single card leaderboard. 8)
