Rumours of another delay continue though, mainly for the XTX which I *think* ATI want out the door first, so everything else might be delayed as a knock-on effect

Sorry if the formatting is utterly screwed...the table didnt copy into the post properly :(

2900XT = 512 MB DDR3 X 8800 GTS = 640 MB DDR3

2900XTX = 1024 MB DDR4 X 8800 GTX = 740 MB DDR3

I just want to see the comparison between XTX = GTX or Ultra and also how much the XTX will overclock taking advantage of DDR4 and a larger memory

Im personally fed up of hearing about this card and just want to see the damn thing!!!

Performance from numbers looks good, the inq keeps saying it will be 8800GTX performance for GTS money which is promising, although it means very little while ATI are still not selling any.

As for the difference in performance in the different tests, either driver related, or maybe because the different game engines stress different parts of the GPU (shaders vrs bandwidth etc). Dont know the specifics, but would guess it's because of that.

yup, when i can actually buy one il get excited, until then ati can say what the hell they like....it means squat.

atm i believe them about as much as i believed pete and his magical intel samples that he never showed anyone but his own mind.... :P

Dailtech reports the following:

AMD's flagship ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX fails to usurp the GeForce 8800 GTX's performance crown

AMD is close to unveiling its long-awaited R600-based ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT. DailyTech previously posted benchmarks comparing the Radeon HD 2900 XT and GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB.

Up until March of 2007, the spearhead of the ATI Radeon HD 2900-family was the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX. This model is the big daddy of AMD’s DirectX 10 lineup, poised to take on NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 GTX and upcoming 8800 Ultra.

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX video cards feature 1GB of GDDR4 video memory, besting the GeForce 8800 GTX’s 768MB of GDDR3 video memory. GPU manufacturers often wait to set the exact clock frequencies of bins until just weeks before launch. Our Radeon HD 2900 XTX sample was released to board partners in the second week of April, features memory clocked at 2.02 GHz and a core clock of 750 MHz.

Physically, the Radeon HD 2900 XTX core is identical to the Radeon HD 2900 XT core. Both feature 320 stream processors, but the XTX differs by bringing GDDR4 to the package.

Despite the reference clock speed differences, DailyTech managed to push the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT up to 845 MHz core and 1.99 GHz memory.

Unlike the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT benchmarked yesterday, the HD 2900 XTX is a 12-inch card geared specifically towards OEMs and system integrators. Expect retail box ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX graphics cards to use the shorter 9.5-inch design, as with the HD 2900 XT.

The test system specifications are as follows:

  • AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT (745 MHz core, 800 MHz GDDR3)
  • AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX (750 MHz core, 1010 MHz GDDR4)
  • AMD ATI Catalyst v8.361 (drivers slated for retail)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX (650 MHz core, 1000 MHz GDDR3)
  • ASUS P5N32-E SLI (nForce 680i)
  • Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800
  • Corsair XMS2 PC2-8500 (800 MHz, 5-5-5-18, 1T)
  • Acer X241W
It's important to note that the GeForce 8800 GTX is a vendor overclocked board that comes shipped with the 650 MHz core clock.

The benchmarks DailyTech performed yesterday utilized release candidate drivers. Today's tests used retail drivers ATI released to its board partners.

The less than stellar performance benchmarks are no surprise to board partners and AMD insiders. Two independent ATI board builders told DailyTech that Radeon HD 2900 XTX will not be a part of their initial portfolios. Given the additional memory cost and bulky card footprint, it seems unlikely the XTX will ever see the light of day.

Not impressive from AMD, makes for a great event in Tunisia, get all the journos along and tell them that the product coming out shortly cant beat something that was released 6 months ago. Excellent. $5bn well spend so far!!!

Don't believe all you read, just wait for the card to be released and then you will see some proper bench tests, then you will be able to comment on whether it is good or not

I dont believe everything i read, but given those benchies, as well as the reports coming out from Tunisia (http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=703&Itemid=1 ) i can only at the moment conclude what i said above. I would love to be proved wrong, but atm i cant see any signs that i will be. (if you have any do post them)

Given these rumours and benches about, if it werent the case then i think AMD would do something about it, either a subtle bench leak or a lifting of the NDA over Tunisia. If their product could beat the 8800U then i dont know why they would be so worried about NDAing the Tunisia event.

Time will tell obviously, but given the evidence so far this is the conclusion that i am left with.

I will blatantly forget about checking that thread as my memory is appalling atm for anything except work, but thanks for the heads up Kenny, i never find the time to get onto XS during term time.

The info is 6 weeks old and doesnt state if the R600 Core clock is stock or overclocked, or the GTX clocks.

March 20, 2007

Next, we got hold of some preliminary benchmarks figures of the R600 XTX card with core clock at 800MHz vs a GeForce 8800 GTX card,Seems like R600XTX is running slightly faster than 8800GTX on the early release of drivers,

The issue I have with all of this is three fold:

1) AMD's card is conspicuous only by it's absence and the 65nm unit will not be

available for first batch of sales (as far as I am aware).

2) Nvidia's card has been out for an age and driver issues still plague it's performance - I am not yet convinved that we have the best driver set-up for these cards - AMD's driver is beta also so comparisons at this point are less than ideal

3) Both companies want the fastest crown and this means multi GPU which has been CPU limited (7900GTX SLI only manages it's full potential on latest AM2 and Core2 CPU's and 8800 SLI are cpu limited until 4ghz+ on current units) - although this does give you the reassurance that the GPU is good for a few more months than usual.

Mav

1. Totally with you.

2. Same agian, although better to have a card to sell at all for the company. The poor driver situation is ridiculous though.

3. SLI/Xfire systems have never been my thing, and with GPUs getting faster faster than CPUs atm i cant see this (both your point and my dislike of the concept) changing much.

REAL numbers from Denny at XS:

Not glamourous, not perfect, but there they are and they're not too bad. OC headroom still to be looked at, but I think it keeps up with a G80 at stock pretty well
