Asus Z170 Pro Gaming freezing during profile selection

Hi guys

Basically I've been having issues with my system blue-screening whilst I play any game, no matter how demanding (or not) they are on the system. The games include The Sims 4, Need For Speed 2016, GTA V, The Witcher 3, Star Wars Battlefront and Stardew Valley. The blue-screens occur within 30 - 45 mins of me being in the game and the error messages are different each time.

The system was purchased from Scan in March this year and I was told to to load the standard 3XS profile to see if removing the over-clock helped - which it did, But now the bios is freezing when I try to load the 3XS over-clock profile, it hangs for however long I leave it until I hard reset the system. When the standard 3XS profile was loaded it happened within a second so something isn't right.

Just in case they are needed the full specs are:

Chassis - NZXT H440 Matte Black Edition
Power Supply - Corsair 750W CS750 modular, quiet, 80PLUS GOLD
Motherboard - Asus Z170 Pro Gaming with SupremeFX Audio & Intel NIC
Processor - Intel Core i7 6700K "Skylake" Quad Core professionally overclocked to 4.6GHz
CPU Cooler - Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler
Memory - 16GB Corsair Vengeance 2666MHz DDR4
Graphics Card - 6GB EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti SC
Sound Card - Asus onboard SupremeFX
System Drive - 500GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD
Storage Drive - 2TB Western Digital Green HDD
Operating System - Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64bit

Any ideas?
 
Have you tried load optimized defaults in the bios at all?. It sounds like there is something wrong with the overclock profile have you ever thought about dialing it in yourself mate :). Welcome to the forum from a Witham Guy ;)

There were some basic overclocking guides on the forum but I can't seem to find them maybe one of the other forumites will be able to help you more I have haswell so I wouldn't know much about overclocking Skylake. Somebody will be able to help you here though fella. TBH it sounds to me like your overclock profile is failing.
 
As of right now I've got it up to 4.6 GHz at 1.350 V, the temps seem a little high, at one point they were in the low 90's, I'm not comfortable with that so I may dial it back.
 
Try lowering the volts fella and I use OCCT for a 30 min stress test.

EDIT: Isn't the 3XS OC under warranty seeing as you bought it in March this year? also I would look at an AIO i.e H100i for your cpu cooler. I have my 4690K@4.6ghz 1.277v and it runs all day every day max temps are 77C but that is under a custom water loop.

Yeah it's under warranty but their customer care service leaves a lot to be desired, I had a very similar problem with my wife's system and all they said was 'remove the over-clock', which admittedly solved the issue but she was then left with a 6700k running stock :huh:

With my system I'm willing to over-clock it myself, lowered the voltage a bit to 1.340, passing Intel XTU etc so far.

Oh dear sorry to hear that it sounds a rip-off seeing as to how much they charge. If is ever paid that amount for an Overclocked PC I would expect the overclock to be under warranty as well. Don't think I'll be using them again. I have Cerebral Palsy so building a system myself would be impossible so that's why I buy pre built.
 
So last night I did a benchmark whilst the bios was using the standard 3XS profile, I used the Intel XTU program. The maximum temperature reached was 95 degrees, this is with no over clock applied and a Be Quiet CPU cooler. Something isn't right somewhere :(
 
Sorry for the delay in getting to you on this dude. From what you are saying it seems the OC is just not right. My suggestion is to go to default settings and grab OCCT to run a stability test while using HWmonitor to watch temps and voltages.

Once you have done this, post your results and we can see if it is the overclock causing the poor temps or if maybe the cooler hasn't been seated properly.

If all is good on stock, I am happy to help guide you through setting a stable and cool OC. As Tolemac has demonstrated, any issues you have building or setting up, there are plenty of people on the forum that are here to help

Stock benchmark should show if it is or not. To be honest if the CPU is running 1.35v, thats the upper end of capability for that CPU. that alone would kick out huge temps.
 
Sorry dudes been busy with work.

Stock temperatures under full load were good. Scan have got back to me RE the ovrclock and said:

"CPU Voltage : 1.35
Core Ratio : 45"

Does that sound right? I was hoping to at least get to 4.6 GHz as they advertised but that wasn't stable enough.

In my personal opinion, even your stock voltage is going a lot higher than it needs to.

Are you comfortable changing setting in the BIOS?

If so I will walk you through setting custom voltage and getting a much more stable and hopefully cooler overclock.

I agree with Kilbane here your voltage should be lower down the scale fella
