That was the total system draw from the wall during OC testing. The CPU was drawing a huge part of that. So a Threadripper CPU rated at 185 TDP can gobble up a lot more power if it needs it for Overclocking.
i am sure this fact also plays a role in a lot of real world benchmarks, not only better raw IPC power.
and the last years of AMD stumbling around with bulldozer etc. sure did not help making things better.
i only hope that software companys catch up and do proper optimizing.
4 cores and 8 threads can not be treated as "upper maximum" anymore.
especially companys like adobe have a lot of work to do when it comes to multicore support.
H.265 performance is basically a good as intels 7900x (41.3 vs 42 fps/s).
H.264 is better (53.9. vs 50.3) nothing to complain about for the same amount of money.

Epic review Tom! This is the top of the line setup that I would want. I can't wait to see what happens when you throw the EK waterblock just announced today on this beastly boy. Better yet, an EK monoblock would be awesome and get rid of that annoying tiny VRM heat-sink fan. Did you use all 4 memory channels or just two in the review testing?
Thank you so much for putting the thought and time into this review.

I can't remember who said it (I've read so many reviews my head is spinning) but they basically said you could run a 16 core TR rig as about four separate PCs. So file server, gaming, web hosting ETC. When you think about it like that (and let's face it that would be a far more practical use than banging out Cinebench scores) the power consumption doesn't seem so bad.

Download Cinebench R15 and run it. You will score a max of around 1300. Then compare that to Ryzen and Threadripper. It's about the most accurate "full CPU" test there is.
what a beast ,and it will get better over time with bios updates , much as i adore the board , i would never use the chip to its potential , but its nice to dream
