If you consider yourself in the group of people who can never have enough CPU performance, the Ryzen 1950X Threadripper might be perfect.

ASUS X399 ROG Zenith Extreme and Ryzen 1950X Threadripper Review

OMG. 700 W for CPU only ( 4 cpu's actually )

That was the total system draw from the wall during OC testing. The CPU was drawing a huge part of that. So a Threadripper CPU rated at 185 TDP can gobble up a lot more power if it needs it for Overclocking.

intel always had a compiler advantage.

i am sure this fact also plays a role in a lot of real world benchmarks, not only better raw IPC power.

and the last years of AMD stumbling around with bulldozer etc. sure did not help making things better.

i only hope that software companys catch up and do proper optimizing.
4 cores and 8 threads can not be treated as "upper maximum" anymore.

especially companys like adobe have a lot of work to do when it comes to multicore support.

H.265 performance is basically a good as intels 7900x (41.3 vs 42 fps/s).
H.264 is better (53.9. vs 50.3) nothing to complain about for the same amount of money.
numbers are from anandtech.

Epic review Tom! This is the top of the line setup that I would want. I can't wait to see what happens when you throw the EK waterblock just announced today on this beastly boy. Better yet, an EK monoblock would be awesome and get rid of that annoying tiny VRM heat-sink fan. Did you use all 4 memory channels or just two in the review testing?

Thank you so much for putting the thought and time into this review.

I can't remember who said it (I've read so many reviews my head is spinning) but they basically said you could run a 16 core TR rig as about four separate PCs. So file server, gaming, web hosting ETC. When you think about it like that (and let's face it that would be a far more practical use than banging out Cinebench scores) the power consumption doesn't seem so bad.

depends... cinebench is the most relevant benchmark for me.

because it translates 1:1 into rendering performance with cinema 4D.
and that is what pays for the computers i build. :)

5930K Bruh

I'm gonna need yall to include the 5930K in these D:

We need some valid representation of some of the older flagship CPUs

Download Cinebench R15 and run it. You will score a max of around 1300. Then compare that to Ryzen and Threadripper. It's about the most accurate "full CPU" test there is.

Plex = 2000 passmark points for a 1080p/10Mbps transcode.
Thats a lot of transcodes from this CPU :)

But still not that much better than a 10 core CPU??? (I know price, but still)

what a beast ,and it will get better over time with bios updates , much as i adore the board , i would never use the chip to its potential , but its nice to dream :)

I was eagerly awaiting reviews of Threadripper to pop up yesterday. Didn't do too much at work after lunch as a result.... ^_^

Anyway, I'm sure it's likely the 16 core i7-7960X will top the Threadripper 1950X when it releases but I'm wondering does it matter?

The Threadripper 1950X in comparison has:
ECC Memory Support
Far More PCIe lanes
& is 70% cheaper.

It kind of makes you wonder why you'd bother looking at an Intel X299 setup at all if a workstation is what you want.

So nice to have actual excitement in the CPU market again - Thanks AMD!

And thanks to Tom for the review as always.
