ASUS VG278H for $629.00

If it's just 3D you want then it is a really good monitor for that (I've heard/read). But you will have to sacrifice some image quality, which is a given with most 3D monitors. I've heard good things about this monitor and the reviews suggest that it is pretty good. I have no experience with any 3D monitors though, so my opinion won't really matter.

Thanks. I really want it for 120hz and to see what 3D is like. I do a lot of image and video editing on my other monitors.

Asus is quality mate, real solid monitors.

This 3d is the best one for you, comes with built-in nvidia 3d vision transmitter means less cables and the monitor is one of thee best looking out there

I know all about this monitor, and the built in IR is why I want this model as well.

However, with the backlight issues... I'm a little hesitant.

ooo Those pictures have made me think twice about this screen. That back light bleed is very bad. I hope its just a issue in a few units and not everyone that Asus makes

From what I have read, everyone has this issue with this monitor after 48 hours of use. Some aren't as bad as the images above; however, they all appear to have backlight halos and bleed.

Thats really bad, Its shocking to see this since Asus screens are awesome but its not the case for this monitor.

This was the same screen that Tom was reviewing and is also giving away in the current competition with the first rig i believe

TTL Asus screen

i wonder if he has experienced any of the blacklight bleeding

i was just reading about this monitor today and found that even though some people did not see it when they first used it, over time the oval backlight bleed started to appear. I reckon its best to stay way from this screen for now and wait to see if the problem gets rectified by Asus, It woul be a hassle to buy one, check the monitor and return it if there is a defect present

Yeah apparently the Halo appears after 48 hours of lightboost usage.

I just bought it.

NCIX said they would exchange the monitor without hesitation if any backlight, halo, or pixel issues arise.

Knowing that will help me sleep at night. But I will let everyone know what happens...

So how did you get on with this mate any bleeding or halo effect?

OH YEAH! My apologies I completely forgot to write my response.

This monitor is almost the best purchase I have ever made!

I first have to say that I had to return my first one due to the 3D emitter not working correctly (don't confuse this with the common 3D emitter problem circling the web) which was due to a faulty cable. However, I did get to use it for a few days and never noticed any halo or backlight bleed AT ALL.

After exchanging for another of the same model, I was able to get 3D working instantly. One word... Amazing. There's nothing like it. Same as the monitor above, no backlight bleed or halo effect at all. It's been just about 30 days of full use with lightboost on max and the backlight is still even and backlighty (as it should be).

One thing to note... the colors are absolutely terrible at the get go. It's decent when you get the settings tweaked to your liking, but I find it better than most other TN panels out there. The different "splendid" modes are nice but there are some that blow my mind with how hideous they look. Blotchy colors, too bright of black, blended lights.

Overall I would give it an 8/10 as a 2D 120Hz overpriced monitor, and possibly a 9.5/10 for an amazingly bright and vivid 3D monitor.

OH OH, almost forgot. The other day I had some issues with the 3D activating as almost an anaglyphic 3D with red and blue... very strange, but I just reset 3D settings and it was fine. And just recently the emitter began giving off a buzzing sound when active... it faded and now I don't hear it at all anymore.

Thanks for the response was really planning on getting one but I dont know if I will even use the 3D so im stuck between this and the Samsung S27A850D I can both for around the same price point and the Samsung is 2560x1440 res...you find yourself using 3D allot you think it justify's the price of VG278H?

I know exactly how you feel. I think I debated getting this monitor over the S27A950D and the XL2420XT for 4 months.

Here's what I came to find. Despite my legitimate bias towards Samsung technology, I had a chance to use the 950D for several hours and this had to be the first time I did not like a Sumsung product. The glossy screen really bothered me and ruined the 3D gaming experience, especially because I found it to be so dark. Comparing it now to Nvidia's 3D vision... wow. TriDef can't even compare to 3D vision. Really, TriDef is terrible. It's unfortunate that Samsung didn't work with Nvidia on this one because my PC monitor is now the only thing that isn't branded Samsung.

The resolution of the 850D is definitely a bonus. I would've liked to see that in the VG278H; however, I don't have an issue with 1080 and it saves some extra rendering power for visual tweaks. As far as image and color quality goes, I think Samsung always takes the cake. The only issue is the glossy screen, which is an immediate turnoff for me.

My final words to you would be, if you don't mind 1080 and you are interested in a great 3D experience, go with the VG278H for sure! I had never tried 3D and now I can rarely play a game without it... it takes some getting used to, but it's a whole new experience. The price was worth it.

I'm currently looking at the S27A750D from Samsung basically the same as the 950 but the stands are different.
