ASUS Strix X99 Gaming Preview

Remind me again why Asrock was spun off. Now Asrock have moved into high-end territory maybe Asus are travelling in the opposite direction. Should we keep a weather-eye for their stuff blowing up now?:D

My first 980 Ti Matrix blew a voltage regulator whilst I was reading emails literally minutes after I installed the drivers with zero overclocks so it's already started ^_^

Reading through for the third time, this looks like something pushed out the door not quite finished. No bios (I take it that means no Broadwell-E bios, not no bios per se), no lighting software, various ROG branded bits and bats, workmanship a bit off, packaging and accents that seem to belong aesthetically with the East Asian rather than Western market, etc. Hopefully this is all just cosmetic that the actual retail product will/can easily correct and the underlying hardware is okay. Still, I'd be in touch to see what's going on and that they haven't dropped one inadvertently. Perhaps it is giving a cack-handed opportunity for it to be said "See, Tom can't be mistaken for biased: he gives us a good kicking too when we warrant it!" LOL!!! We do seem to be seeing a spate of products where folk in bang-on outfits have dozed off or missed out something simples.

Its normal when receiving review samples early to have to wait for these sort of things. Half the time the 'driver' CD's are just normal retail CD's they have been burned onto not the printed retail things the public see.

Basically I have it which is awesome and that means when the bios lands I can test straight away rather than have to wait for it to come from China

I get that. Throwing in the odd aesthetics of the packaging and inserts plus the not-quite-straight ROG bits makes me wonder though.

Yep ^_^

Next it will be a ROG Strix Rampage Deluxe Crossblade Professional Extreme Sabertooth Crosshair motherboard XD

I'd totally buy that.

Actually I think it's probably a move to make the STRIX range which is predominantly gaming orientated fall under the umbrella of the ROG branding. It seems a bit silly to have Republic of Gamers exclude the most mainstream gaming gear.

More of an expansion of ROG from only the uber leet stuff to the whole range. Is this good or bad? Hard to tell this early but wouldn't surprise me to see some ROG logos on more stuff. Maybe they'll launch something new for the top end or even go Matrix for top end and Strix for mainstream all badged as ROG.

They could even be going the opposite and expanding ROG to cover everything gaming. Phase out Strix slowly with a bit of dual branding for a year or so then let it slip quietly into the night.

Marketing departments. Who knows what they're up to, from experience though they're always trying to change something.

Hey Tom thanks for the preview, are the USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Type-C?Also I am sure you are under NDA for pricing but will this be on Asus X99-Pro side or the Asu X99-Deluxe in terms of pricing?

Just seen this on scan for £279.00, I'm thinking of getting one for my build.

I feel like a massive spoon for having to ask, but will these newer X99 boards designed for Broadwell-E be backwards compatible with Haswell-E chips, I really want to use this board for my 5820k, I've seen nothing to say it wont but at the same time I've seen nothing that says it will

As far as i know the original 2011-3 CPU will be compatible with the newer motherboards

I'm now torn between this and the Rampage 10...

I prefer the look of the rampage 10 to the strix but is it worth £250 more?

I don't need the DAC, im not a major overclocker either so all the bells and whistles ain't really needed.....

Do I pay more for looks or save money and get something that will suit my needs just fine lol

Its a tough one.

Sounds like the rampage for you would just be bragging rights. Get the Strix IMHO

I would say;
First; can you afford it?
Second; do you need it?
Third; do you want it?
Fourth; Gave two yes's, there's your answer:)

You wouldn't be wrong there Guvnor, I was set on the rampage but saw the strix for about £250 less... but who doesnt like bragging rights? Lol

Although I have money for either but I want to balance wants and needs, Seeing as I'm getting the Titan XP I think I can justify not getting the Rampage.

I went through something very similar. I wanted a great all singing Z170 motherboard. Scoured many reviews and narrowed it down to Asus. Thought I'm not spending more on a motherboard than the cpu. So £300 was my limit. The choices were between the Formula and Deluxe. Read many reviews and somewhere along the line, the not so popular Pro caught my attention. It had qualities that was similar at a less price, so I bought it. That said I do now and again wish I bought the Formula, for no other reason than it is a great and respected motherboard and it looks so cool.
