The next iteration of the exclusive Ares models is here, the Ares III. Two Hawaii XT GPUs combined with an EK waterblock. What's not to enjoy?

Mmmmm Kidney or Son....Kidney or Son? Don't have a son so it'll have to be a Kidney. There's never a gang of Triad organ harvesters around when you want one is there

Tom any chance your going to be able to get us some overclocking results? or has the card already been sent on its way? If these were indeed cherry picked to the extreme, I would like to see what they can do.

good and bad

The Good : So far from what I've seen this card is excellent, a bit pricey but excellent. I think the few good things to remember are the card has a full cover water block and won't have the warranty voided and its a super slim single slot card ready to go out of the box. I mean with a good custom loop you could have a sweet mini itx rig capable of awesome frame rates. Maximus VII Impact + ARES III = AWESOME!.
The Bad: for the money I think there are a lot better options plus I still think AMD lacks a lot with their drivers especially for CF. Also in ASUS's defense a little bit I think the r9 series GPU's are good but not good enough to choose over NVIDIA especially now with the release of the 970 and 980.

@ Newbie_NS810

There aren't any really complete reviews yet so far Tom here at OC3D has the best but this website http://pcdiy.asus.com/2014/10/tested-ares-iii-water-cooled-r9-295-x2-review/ has a really good temp test breakdown and they also oc'd the card to 1125 gpu - 5500 memory at 1.3mV.

No video?

Would have loved to see a follow up review video. I think the Ares and Mars cards deserve to be reviewed and shown off, in all their pricey, limited run glory.

I didn't know you finally got around to this actual review.
Last I saw, you'd only done a photo shoot.
You're right about my card on all counts.
I don't know if I would've bought mine if I had read this review first, but that doesn't really matter at this late date.
Just about every e-tailer I've checked still has these cards in stock. I think ASUS lied about only 500 cards being produced.
This card takes everything I throw at it and grinds it to dust.
It's the fastest dual vga card I own and even beats my EVGA GTX 690 quite handily.
When you mention the Power Color R9 295x2 Crossfire, you do mean a pair of these dual vga cards, don't you?
If I had the choice now, between an R9 295 and this ARES 3, I'd probably go with the R9 295 and a custom block.
This ARES really can't be all that exclusive if nobody is buying them, can it?
The only people that know I own this card are on-line forum members. I don't even know any overclocker in the real world, so I'm the only person I try to impress with new tech such as this.
My neighbors are mainly retiree's and own some sort of pre-built computer if they even have one at all.
I've very carefully never mentioned to any of them that I know what I do about computers.
If I did, I'd be spending most of my time fixing their little computer problems, mainly because they fail to RTFM!
About the only thing that really disappoints me about this ARES 3 is that this water block has no lighting whatsoever!
Why go to the bother of using a blood red acrylic top when it completely disappears after install? That just plain sucks!
This was a very nice review. I was expecting to see what your OC could do for comparison's sake, though.
For my next build, I already have a GALAX GTX 980 HoF.
I'm just waiting on the water blocks to be produced and then I'll buy another for SLi. As usual, these new HoF's are fast and gorgeous and completely overpriced.
In fact, I'm thinking of selling the one I now have and then buy a pair of EVGA GTX 980 Hydro Copper's instead.
At least I can those here in the USA instead of importing these HoF's from Hong Kong, plus I can buy an EVGA extended warranty.
Then again, I may just buy both!
After all, it's just money! ;)
