Motherboard manufacturer ASUS has released the ROG Rampage Formula, which is based on the Intel X48 chipset and one they claim is the best gaming choice today.

Details in the news article

Nice to see the x48 making some appearances.

Always a bit weary of mobo maufs claim of bios(s) being `overclocking friendly` in the sense that it`s `automagic`.

Probably good for those who don`t really want to know anything about the art, but what a minimal % extra from their cpu, that they know other people are getting.

Whereas an enthusiast would get a 50% oc on something with some fine tuning, I always assume the `automagic` ones to give perhaps 25% and no more. (unless u turn all that stuff off and do the enthusiast stuff).

That % is ok for those just basically not interested in the art I guess.

The cpu level up is on the blitz too, it is just some auto settings, like you said for people who don't care to understand the 'art' (that made me lol when you said that) of OC'in

ROG bioses are totally OC friendly though so I wouldn't worry about that! Probably be a nice, if not expensive mobo.

Ok i'm stuck :(

Looking around and this mobo is likely to cost about £175 ish..

My problem is what mobo to buy when I hit Vegas in May.. I'm gonna more than likey go for the Q9450 so it will need to support that which isn't a problem and obviously overclock very very well but with Nehalem coming end of 08 but more likely start 09 with its socket change, whatever I buy is only likely to be with me for 6 - 9 months which begs the question.. Is it worth buying one of these top end boards or get proven good overclocker for £100 - £125 ish board (equivalent in $s) like a DFI or something. DDR2 is even cheaper out there as in stupidly cheap so I think i've decided to stick with that but just get the fastest to keep me going.

Decision, decisions...

At the end of the day, no matter what you buy or when you buy it there will always be something new just around the corner ready to make your purchase obsolete.

I just buy whatever I can afford when I can afford it. I've seen people wait around for years for the price of X to come down, or for a new product to come out.

Oh I get that but its not like just sticking with 775 now and swapping in and out CPUs as I'll seriously be looking at getting a Nehalem proc when they come out so I spose I don't really want to be investing in the very best 775 mobo.. Spose that answers my own problem.. But then I want the best :(

No point worrying about it now. You have a few months yet.

These 45nm quads blow due to crapola multi imo, UNLESS you buy the unlocked multi cpu which is not worth the money, so I revert back to my original statement - the 45nm quads blow.

Good luck getting 500*8 stable...

Just wait, other than benchies you won't get any gains IRL swapping to a quad/new mobo.

I guess that`s another advantage with already having the overly priced extremes. U can go out, buy the new X48 boards, with some cheap cheap rated DDR3, and do whatever u like with the multi. - in theory, bios permitting.

The new x48 boards are shaping up to be very nice indeed. P5E3 Premium and Rampage Formula (Which is DDR2 btw) should be screaming overclockers.

I'm sure Jim'll the Rampage a thorough toasting when he gets one...

Well it would either be the Q6600 or the Q9450 and as i'm jumping from an E6600 it is worth but.. I wouldn't say it is if you already have a Q6600 but from my lil dual core I reckon it is.. Plus its not like I go States very often so I might as well get some stuff cheaper while I'm out there. I've only got 2 months.. Saying a fair few until my hols makes me sad!!

VK i saw the rampage too, does look nice...

Bungral - In real life you won't see any benefit of the quad over the dual core except supreme commander and benchmarks.

The points would be good for the team though lol.

Exactly!! I didn't get any points for all I did which sucked :(

And these comments coming from you 'Mr. I Gotta Upgrade For The Sake Of It!!!?? Gotta make ya laugh ;) hypocrite!! :D:p

I've had my Abit IP35 Pro for ages and not felt the need to upgrade as it's frigging stable as hell. Jims found the same with Asus RoG boards based on Intel chipsets

Personally I am waiting for Nehalem to rock my world :)
