Asus Maximus V Gene z77 problem

Woke up this morning and tried booting into my PC but every time I tried booting in it would shut down in 3-4 seconds and would repeat cycle. Motherboard has an on board sensor and found out the tempature would start at 20 then rapidly increase to 98 then it would shut down. No overclocking on my CPU. Could it be a faulty mobo or CPU? Thanks

I'd try taking the cooler off, cleaning the CPU and the heatsink and reapplying the thermal paste.
