Asus Maximus Formula/Q6600 G0 overclocking

Hey guys, so yeah this is one of my first posts on the forums.

And well i'm just curious as to how I would go about overclocking my Q6600 G0 once it's fully burnt in. The only thing I really have overclocked in my life was my old Radeon 9600 with ATi tool, but I hate to think that was REAL overclocking.

Anyway, i've noticed a few things in the bios like "Extreme Tweaker" which is amusing because i've never seen such a BIOS option in any of my older motherboards.

So the bit of cooling that I am using for my CPU is simply the Intel retail stock cooler. Which isn't impressive but the CPU runs at 30 degrees celsius at idle, so I don't understand where there would be a problem overclocking it.

Give me some hinters? Should I use the profiles that are already on there?

PS: I'm only posting this because I haven't really seen any posts on the boards that are orientated around Intel chipsets and CPU's.

Apologies if there already has been.
 
Mate... no offence or anything but why would you go and buy one of the best motherboards around for overclocking and for performance if you don't know what you are doing? :p

Anywhoo... there aren't any profiles already on there.. you have to save them yourself.

Basically keep your Quad under 60oC at load.. and I wouldn't go above 1.5v.

The Maximus is an outstanding board you can easily get 450Mhz FSB from it. ;)

:P What do you think this motherboard is for then? I game alot if that helps?! haha.
 
I meant that the Motherboard is the best of the best. It is amazing! :)

It just made me giggle when you said you had never seen Exterme Tweaker before.. because the whole point of having a Maximus Formula is to overclock and game! :)

It is a easy thing to do to overclock the Maximus.

I recommend trying to get to 3Ghz first. See what the temps are like and then maybe carry on.

Have a fiddle. Oh and check out the Maximus's manual. Helps alot. ;)

Yeah the manual is a life saver, but yeah I think im gonna get a new air cooler before overclocking.
 
Quads can go up to 80deg under load no sweat and the problem with a stock cooler is once the volts and heat start flowing the stock cooler craps out, because it is... Crap.
 
Yeah, i've noticed this. I've also talked to a few guys about getting a new air cooler (heatsink & fan basis).

I was told that one of the Artic 7's were good? And the Tuniq tower? Is there any preferred heatsink & air cooling solution that anyone has on the forums?

I have no real intention on putting a backplate behind it so a nice and easy installation is appreciated :) haha.
 
Well the Arctic Cooling 7 is good and cheap but not the best air cooling solution. People tend to go for the Scythe Ninja or Infinity or the Noctua one.. Can't remember the model.. Depends on how far you are planning on overclocking.

Maximum of 3.2, minimum of 3.0 GHz in all fairness :P
