Having looked at the GTX970 version of the ASUS Strix and found it to be incredible, how does the GTX980 Strix stack up?

Typical we in Australia are being ripped off the 980's are more expensive the the 780Ti the Strix here is $869 more than $100 dearer

Nice review and comparing the 980 to 970 results I would question for those running 1080p is the extra £ for the 980 worth it

The price difference for the cards is substantial, but when you're looking at the cost of entire systems each one is going to come in much closer to the same £/performance mark. And really, that's the most logical way of looking at it. Your PSU is one of those things you have to buy, but it's not going to give you any better framerates. Nor is your harddrive, your case, or most of the other things you spend money on.

To illustrate the point: PCPartPicker's current $1000 and $1200 pre-configured builds sport a 970 and 980 respectively at the moment. The 970 build is still slightly better price/performance, but the difference is massively smaller than looking at the cards directly.

In my budget build I've got a pentium anniversary paired with a 750 TI strix, I'd argue for the majority of games even the 970 is overkill for 1080p gaming.

I've been impressed with the strix tech as well, silent, even when the fans spin up.

So do you have a pair of 970s on hand? If so,....how is that working out for you?

Yes I got a pair of msi gaming 970's. They are amazing cards cool quiet and overclock like monsters.

Ive got my 2 cards running at 1506 core 8ghz memory with highest temps in the early 70's and thats in a h440 which isnt the most airflow orientated case. Ive benchmarked them and hit 18.5k on firestrike which beats the stock 290x xfire, 780ti sli.

comparing the performance between the 980 and 970 and the price difference the 970 is great bang for buck

I like that. I think that the 970s are going to be the way I go. The MSI cards look pretty good to me. If I save a little, I will have them before the end of the year.
(it sux being on a fixed income)

I know the feeling, I saved ready for the maxwell release although I was expecting it later in the year. I was planning on the 980 but when I saw the reviews for the 970 it swayed me as I don't plan on gaming at 4k for a long time my 2k monitor is fine and the 970 has no issues with games at this resolution.

Can't wait to see what the unlocked maxwell will do

The 970 at stock is only at max 10% slower than the 980 yet a hell of a lot more expensive. The 970 can be clocked above stock 980 performance and can run anything at 2k without issues. 60fps at 4k even for the 980 is dreaming unless you chuck 3 or 4 cards in there and even then I think you would struggle with certain titles

Looked on the Egg at the MSI 970 cards and noticed people complaining about coil whine using them.
I'll probably just go with an EVGA card now. I know that they have great customer support.

I've not noticed any coil whine with my 2 cards, I bought them from scan so any issues all rma's go through them and they are very good

The MSI card would be optimal as far as looks go because I will be using it/them in my MSI Z87 Gaming G45 board.
