Nice find but is there really any point seeing as non reference 980's don't really get hot and reference blower style cards according to OCUK are being phased out as the manufacturers are concentrating on their own designs i.e DCU2, ACX 2.0 etc...

Once again, what exactly is the point of Poseidon cards? Can anyone thing of a >>reasonable<< benefit?

With Maxwell none really other than looks as the blower style reference models are being phased out so this is pretty much just a cash grab.

I looked at the 780 Poseidon and came away with a single conclusion - confusion.

Confused because you don't need the Poseidon to be watercooled to work when using just two cards spaced apart properly. They work fine by themselves with just the fans working.

Yet with three or four cards installed in a system, they overheat to the point that even using the built-in watercooling doesn't keep them under 70C with the fans screaming at 3150RPM.

I would be applauding the Poseidon's design if it actually worked in 3-way and 4-way SLI, but it simply doesn't. These cards are for single and dual-GPU use only, for which the elaborate hybrid design becomes pointless IMO.

It's fair to say that Maxwell is a exceptional chip and it's efficient as hell when it comes to thermals, but paired with the Poseidon cooler and a zero db fan profile.. give it some extra voltage and clocks it'll be a true cool silent monster.

EDIT: personally I've always had a soft spot for the reference nVidia blower, they just look the biz.

It really comes down to the price, if they can manage to undercut the price of a standard 980 + a waterblock then it starts to make some sense. If you also consider perhaps someone who is new to watercooling and blocking cards seems like a scary prospect then that's worth a little premium. Personally I find that one of the hardest parts of water cooling and it's the most worrying. The GPU is generally the most expensive single component in a build and attaching a huge plate of metal to it is quite a tense moment.

Actually it really doesn't look that bad either, I find it a pleasant all round solution, it doesn't make me lust after it but it's not offensive much like Maximus Formulas.

Of all the confused niche watercooling products this makes the most sense to me. Expandable AIO's and mounts for graphics cards they, they are confusing. This solution unlike others genuinely saves a difficult stage from a watercooling build without adding an excessive cost. It's the only such product I would consider and it's much nicer they just leave it at 1/4" fittings rather than strapping a rubbish pump and radiator to it.

Ha - That card is Epeen only. I would prefer to buy a 980 and a water block. The price/perf is not worth it for the ROG Poseidon cards.

+1 on JRs price point comment. But I'd also add that if Asus actually sold a proper sexy block on the card instead of a hybrid, and came in under the block/card combo cost, they'd sell tons. Especially if they came to market with it quickly. Look at all the 970 guys waiting for blocks right now.

I wanted the poseidon when I was doing my build, but ultimately it was too much for my budget, and after Toms vid on the twins, I never looked back after that point.

To this day I still don't regret my decision to get them, but I would of loved to get a 970 or 980 instead, but I am happy with what I got

I was all over the first Poseidon but after some research then if you really wanted to go WC then a proper block is much better. I think its a nice idea but for the price then it would not be worth it. Looks nice though.
