A work friend is after a new card and has come down to 2, A reference 780 Ti or an Asus Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II OC.

I've tried swaying him towards other cards but his mind is made up.

So, Which card and why ?

Any suggestions are appreciated :)

This is very much personal opinion then, but if I were air cooling one of them, I'd get the 780Ti because I'm in love with how good it looks. Obviously it's an amazing performer too, and it runs nice and quiet with the reference cooler.

If it would have been watercooling I'd have gone for the 290X, and overclocked the hell out of it :D

Both are good cards but the 290 is definitely more bang for the buck compared to the 780Ti. If he wants to splash the cash and go all out the 780Ti is faster if not by much on average. Both are as loud and as hot as each other and use around the same amount of power.

Personally, i'd go for the non X version of the Asus 290, there is literally 3-4fps difference between the X and non X 290s with £100-130 difference between them.

For overclocking the 780Ti would probably be better but there isn't much performance to be gained in games with overclocking, you only see real performance gains in benchmarks.

I think he's leaning more towards the AMD card as he's a big BF4 player and with the support of Mantle soon it should be interesting.
I'll just collect info for the time being and present it to him on Monday and let him make his mind up :)

P.S I keep trying to nudge him over to the green team as he is a tinkerer so he would have more "Tinkering" ability with the "Ti" i.e overclocking etc...according to reviews.

Asus 290x dcuII certainly the better choice. More bang for buck, very good cooler and the elusive but greatly anticipated mantle.

If your work colleague has that particular asus 24" 144hz monitor, a system with poor airflow and plays way too much Bioshock Infinite, then the 780 Ti.

R9 290 xfire setup I'm currently sporting certainly has put a smile on my face that's for sure :) *and made me use my headset a fair bit more*

The DCUII 290/290x isn't the best imo. The cooler is quiet but not as powerful as other vendor's ones. I'd still say get it as he is a big BF4 player and the FPS difference over the 780Ti isn't huge.

What does Bioshock Infinite have to do with it

It's just the first game that came to mind that runs a good chunk better (fps) on nvidia graphics. My point was trying to elaborate that what games he plays could influence what gpu to purchase. I suppose resolution will also come into it, but you've not stated what resolution he plays on so I assume 1080p (though overkill for these cards).

if he's a big battlefield guy then i suppose a 290 would be the best option, 290x/780ti are nothing for people who have to ask their workbuddy to search for parts.

Ahhh gotcha, Yeah he games at 1080P but he has shifted more towards the green camp after playing the Arkham games with full Physx on my rig ^_^
