Ok, I'll prefix this with .. I've moved over to PC from xbox so be gentle with me.

Now.. whilst i can play a little (and am getting used to KB/M) I'm finding that if I go one on one with people from distance that I'm getting dropped uber quick, even if i get teh drop on them they turn and kill me quickly.

I need pointers .. i've just realised about countering recoil via mouse and using more burst to keep recoil down which has helped a lot but i still get murdered by some.

Any hints from BF vets.

Same as me dude, I was pretty epic on BF3 on PS3 if I do say so myself...just moved back to PC with BF4 and it's tough.

You need to get to know the maps inside and out, I'm trying to snipe but just haven't found the sweet spots in the maps yet. I know exactly were to go in BF3, and can lie there for 15mins without anybody even noticing me.

It's just practice too, it's a bit harder to aim coming from consoles, you have to be more precise, plus with a sensitive mouse. Just takes time to control it.

I did get my first knife kill last night though, but straight away got shot by a guy. I had the choice of either of them, they drove through the forest in a truck so I got out my C4 and chased them, then they got out so I was like "Shizer, shizer, which one!" chose the sniper, but the guy with the shotty got me afterwards. :(

I mainly played battlefield 3 on ps3 and I was not too bad, I am now on bf4 on my pc and I am having fun but I am being demolished most of the time. I was worse at the start, then I spent some time in the test range and that helped me a fair bit. Especially with vehicles(heli)

You just need to practice with recoil and burst firing. It all depends on the weapon and set up as well, using a high rate of fire weapon at range isn't going to be as effective as a low rate of fire weapon at range.

The best weapon to start off with is the AK 5C, very little recoil and is good at all ranges. Slap a ergo or angle grip on it with a silencer and laser sight and you have a perfect weapon for close, medium and long range. Firing in quick 2-3 round bursts for long distance seems to drop people easy with the AK 5C, for me anyway.

It may not be all down to you though, there are problems with the BF4 netcode that need fixing ASAP.

See the vids in this link

I personally never bother with single-or burst shot. You just automatically get used to how long to keep your finger on the trigger (or mouse button).

For me its more learning the maps, and getting to know what path people generally take around it. Do they go this way and this way, or through here, do they often dare to run past here.

Always use full auto but when firing at longer distances you don't want to hold down the trigger :)
You aren't going to hit anything if you do that, you need to tap fire. Every three rounds let off the trigger and then back on for another three rounds, repeat untill you kill the target.

The longer you hold down the trigger the more your bullets spread increases. To keep bullets on target at range you need to fire in quick bursts.

The closer someone is to you it doesn't matter as much because even with increased bullet spread you will still land more rounds. From medium to long range you need to be firing in bursts.

I'll give the burst fire a go, but I just tend to have on full auto but only fire three rounds a time, maybe more as the target is closer. Obviously if they are within a few meters of you....go crazy! :D

This is what I mean dude :)

Don't use burst mode, leave it on full auto but fire in three round bursts. With practice you can fire using full auto in three round bursts just as fast as holding down the trigger.

my tip is to be patient and not to run all around like kids on call of duty. By taking cover and flanking you gain a lot in advantage. in a 1 vs 1 firefight on pretty much any map if you get a kill on him or it lasts to long you should bail as the enemy's team could have been helping him or flanking you. if you flanked an group of enemy's alone and there's no cover you can throw a grenade on the floor at them and start firing either prone or strafing deepening on the situation. thing's like camping far away from your team can get you killed quick. the way you fire isent a very big thing as long as you found whats best for you or what you like best, personally i like to keep fiering at close range and long time burst at range. Playing campaign can help a lot to find the style you should or want to play

You could play something more hectic just to improve your aim. Warsow is a free game which makes battlefields feel like a walk in the park.

Ahhh I'm with you. :p It's quicker that way than having to switch it back to full auto. Don't want to burst fire, turn around and need full auto coz a guy is just running up to you meters away.

One thing I'd like help with is flying choppers! So not used to a mouse for that.

Well, the easiest weapons to play with in my opinion are the M416, AEK and M16A4. My personal favourite is the M16A4 with Angled Grip, either Compensator or Suppressor, Laser and Red Dot Sight. The M16 shoots laser beams and has a high damage throughput, but due to the burst fire, there's always a couple of rounds going to waste, after you killed an enemy.

M416 has VERY easily managable recoil, good damage throughput and can take down enemies very fast at all ranges. It's what I would recommend if you came directly from consoles. Again Angled Foregrip, Muzzle Break, Lasersight and RDS.

Probably the hardest out of the three to control is the AEK, but this thing is a lean mean death machine. Highest rate of fire, very high recoil. I personally use Angled, Compensator, Laser and RDS (again). But I advise against this in the beginning, while still getting used to using the mouse for recoil control.

I realize my playstyle is far from perfect, so take this with a grain of salt:
I personally don't burst fire deliberatly. I hold the trigger down as long as I feel I am still hitting things and the second I realize I'm getting to inaccurate I stop shooting, wait for the gun to reset, and start going full retard again. This works for me mostly, because I play rambo style -> very aggressive, many close quarter engagements.

Be advised: I play Medic pretty much exclusively so my "Tips" may not apply to you.

To be honest, I actually find a shotgun an EASY weapon to use, you can't sit still though, you've got to run in, run against anything with cover like a wall, through buildings, across short open spaces and you'll get loads of kills. This was the case in BF3 anyway, it's actually my second or third best weapon according to my stats.

Shaun, be advised: Being at the wrong end of a shotgun can be VERY enraging. There's nothing a normal player can do against shotgunners, I am constantly oneshot-sniped across the map with 840s and I have ragequit more than once, when a server had more than 3 people using shotguns... ;)

LOL, how do they snipe with shottys?

I can imagine it's frutrating, but when your the one just running and when someone crosses your path, one click and you get a kill it feels awesome. You can easily get ten kills before dying, maybe more but that's around what I'd expect to get.

Make sure your mouse sensitivity is properly set up, it's especially important at longer rangers. There are plenty of tutorials about that on the internet.

This second one is the basics of the basics of using a firearm but I'll mention it just in case:

This is how you aim when using iron sights (or "open sights") Notice that the target (the gray dot) is above the front sight:
Open_sight_types.svg

This is how you aim when using optics. The target (enemy's head in this case) is in the middle of the sights/crosshair:

Right now I can't really think of any other reason why you might be missing your target

err that's planetside dude.. not bf4.

My advice if you want to get better at this is not to play anything else because bf4's shooting is pretty unique.

What you've effectively lost is the auto-aim feature from your console gaming. While I can see everyone is giving you tactics tips, surely you already know all this from playing it on a console? All you need is shooting tips right?

Pick a gun, that you like, and stick with it until you have all the unlocks for it. The worst thing you can do is get frustrated with a gun and try something else because you will be learning it's recoil and spread patterns (even though spread is random in bf4) all over again.

Stick it out, try the different attachments until you find something comfortable and then just roll with that gun until you master it.

This is very very sound advice just stick to a gun till you have it down before moving on to something else

+1 for this from me too.
