Apparently they've been buying up mapping businesses and corporations lately patenting new ways of creating a new experience or ways for users to view maps here's how they're doing it.

They don't like Google being such a big part of the iPhone, so by introducing Apple Maps, the only major piece of software that Google will still develop for Apple is the search engine, so next stop Apple Search?

Also the map app does have some decent features from what I've read, but also lacks some. The biggest problem I see with it, is the lack of street-view. Sure it has the cool spy-plane aerial view of the world, but I would find it a lot easier to navigate if I could see things from street level...Unless I'm flying a helicopter or something, then it might be useful to see what things look like when you're 600m in the air.
