Anti-static wrist bands

Who here uses them?

I built my PC fine without one but on a recent facebook post from cyberpower or some other company, there seemed to be loads of people moaning about how the system builder wasn't wearing an anti-static wristband.

I'm not sure whether this was just pointless flaming or if there was any substance behind the argument.

When I built mine I wore one, but every time since when I've just been upgrading parts or tinkering I've never bothered. I think the main things that can be damaged are things like memory, but I think most people probably don't bother with it to be honest, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I think it's fairly unlikely that your components will get damaged really, it's just a precaution for your expensive stuff

If you work on a rug and/or wear a wool sweater then yeah I would probably use one, but otherwise just remember to touch the case when you start working on your PC and you'll be fine. Never had any problems, but better safe than sorry I suppose.

I only used one when i built my first pc but i found it a pita as i couldnt get into tight spaces in the case etc. Never bothered since.

Touch the case as often as you can. It's a habit of mine now after building so many PCs, I don't even notice I'm doing it anymore.

dont use one myself never have. As long as ur grounded to metal at some point you'll be fine. Myself I have balls of steel so I just well you get the picture. lmao

naw seriously I just touch the case often as others have said. You get so used to doing it you dont even know your doing it. hmm kinda like my above comment :D

Aslong as you dont moonwalk in socks on your carpet you should be fine.

But to be 100% sure touch a bare metal object or the ground in one of your wall plugs.

That is what i do.

Actually I wonder if touching the case still makes sense, given that they're usually painted. Alternative form of asking this: Do cases usually use conductive paint?

Back in the early days they were almost needed as components were a lot more sensitive to static, but now it isnt really a factor anymore.

As almost everyone above me said, I do touch the case every now and then but mostly I make sure that I handle the components from the cooler/heatsink and things like motherboards, etc. I try to handle them from the sides and try to avoid touching the sensitive components like the cpu socket.

I didnt use one either, I just used common sense like many others.... Touch the case to ground yourself every so often....

I read that some people install the Power Supply first and plug the mains lead in and also into the wall (obviously with the power off) as this way everything is earthed to the mains, however I still use common sense over everything else

Ah ok, was just wondering about everyone's opinion on the matter.
I always wondered about touching the case if it was painted, still do it out of habit though.

Every case is painted... Have you ever seen black metal? And I'm talking about seen, not heard.
