Another upgrade thread

So as I'm getting my student loan next week and intel price cuts are a week later I figure it's about the perfect time to upgrade!

So I'm just asking a little advice from you all. This is what I've picked so far and any comments or suggestions are welcome.

MB: Gigabyte DS3P

I'm going for this because I like the 965 chipset, it has good memory performance and good drive performance. I was looking at the Asus P5N32-plus but it seems to have had a few problems, I'm also probably never going to go sli either so the extra cash seems a waste.

CPU: E6600

After the pricecuts this should be somewhere around £130-140 which is about the limit of what I want to spend. If I don't go for this I'll get the E6420.

RAM: Not sure yet, maybe some OCZ 6400. Or I might push the boat out and get a set of dominators!

Any suggestions? Problems?

Not sure on RAM compatibility with the DS3, worth checking.

Personally I'd get an Asus P5B or something instead (personal preference). Also the e4300 is a good bet if you're not gonna use virtualisation.

Hmm, I like the ram ham. I was looking at the P5b-E, just heard a lot of stories about Vdroop on the asus boards. I thought I was making a good choice on teh gigabyte board, it's had good reviews, good price and apparently a good clocker. I'll have a closer look at some of the P5B boards though.

Vdroop is a problem on every board too an extent. Theres things you can do to get rid of it though, and the asus boards ive listed above have been tested and proven.

Well I'm definitely gonna have to look into those boards more thoroughly. Damn you Ham, making me do stuff other than my dissertation!

Deffo take a look at the P5B as advised. Most ppl will tell you that it's the best board for easy overclocking with c2d's.

Seriously consider the abit AB9 QuadGT too - great mobo ~£105.

DFI are only just poking the 775 market atm, and the results from that new infinity look promising for a budget/mid board.

Hmm, ok thanks to Ham my first choice now seems to be the P5B-E plus. Since the quadgt is only £10 more expensive, would it be worth it? I've heard it had a LOT of problems when it came out does anyone know if they've been fixed?
