Another noob build advice thread!!!

Greetings all! First time posting after a few weeks of trolling the OC3D forums unregistered. Lovely site with TONS of useful hints/reviews/opinions...and now I'm calling on a bit of that to help me decide on my first real custom build.

Here's the scoop: currently running an OLD Dell XPS720 with E6750, upgraded 300GB WD VelociRaptor and GTX 465. Yes, I'm embarrassed too!

I've been doing my research and reading tons of reviews and this is the rig I've come up with so far, please tell me what you think:

Corsair Carbide 500R (White)

i7-2600k

Noctua NH-D14 (Anyone tried painting the fan housings?)

ASRock Z68 Extreme7 Gen3

Corsair AX850 PSU

Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600 (Changed up to 8GB of the low-profile kit now)

EVGA SuperClocked GTX 570 HD

Corsair Force GT 120GB SATA III (May come later to save some $ right now)

My only real concern is the mobo. I have seen and heard mixed things regarding ASRock's quality and customer support. I saw that TTL used one of their boards in the Bengal build which is probably a good sign but I would like to hear some more opinions from you guys. I'd like a board that will be slightly more 'future-proof' than the standard Gigabyte UD boards (ie: Ivy Bridge compatible, PCI-E 3.0). I like the fact that the ASRock supports multiple GPU's at x16 whereas most of the other options limit you to either x16/x8 or x8/x8 (keep in mind I will be transferring the GTX 465 into the new system as well to run PhysX as well as having another GPU to help out with Folding at Home (which I am obsessed with now! hahah)

I could probably get away with scrapping the SSD just to save a few extra bucks, so that is a little up in the air right now as well. Ideally I would like to add in a 2nd GTX570 later on down the road so having a board that has the bandwidth to allow all 3 cards to run at their maximum capabilities (yes, I know I will be losing performance when SLI'd).

Sorry for the long-winded first post. I'm really just looking for some advice, and maybe even a helpful push in the right direction to get this project started. Any and all help, opinions, experience is more than welcomed!!

Thanks guys!!!!

(Attached is my cart on newegg.com just sitting there taunting me! hahaha)

ok first of all is this just a gaming a rig? if so the 2500k pretty much has exactly the same performance as the 2600k, if you doing loads of editing and stuff then keep the 2600k but I would look at the 2500k. And I would not touch asrock at all, have a look at the asus or gigabyte range of motherboards. the ax850 is a very good choice and it will easily handle to 570s in sli. for the ram there is really no need for 16gb, save the cash and get 8gb of ram. :)plus dont spend your money on a hdd cooler..

Looks good. But you need Low Profile RAM in order for the NH-D14 to fit. Are you going to be getting another HDD or just use the 300GB one from the old build for the time being?

Hahaha the HDD cooler just got added to the cart. I guess it's a freebie or something. Regarding the 2500/2600k I do convert a lot of videos for use with my media center PC, and when I'm not at the computer I like to leave it running F@H. I figured the big boy 2600k would help out in that aspect as well. The 300GB HDD I have now would get wiped and used as my main OS drive if I opt to go without the SSD for now.

RAM wise, the Vengeance kit won't fit under the D14?

Yup, the 2600k is a good choice for ya then. The vengeance heat spreaders are too tall. I have them myself and they are stupidly large. Go for some low profile ram and you will be good to go.

Ok, switched it up to the Vengeance LP 2x4GB ram kit. Still a little nervous about the ASRock board. Initially I was looking at the MSI Z68A-GD80 but it lacks the ability to be able to run multiple GPU's in anything other than x8/x8. That added to the totally ridiculous fact (I can't believe I'm actually even concerned with this) that I'm trying to keep my rig to a white/black/gold theme and I'm not so keen on the blue on the MSI boards. More thoughts/suggestions?

Tbh there is very little difference between x16 x8 on the current gen of cards and will likely be the case in the near future. So if your still worried about the ASRock board, choose a more reliable board

.

I would replace that MB with Asus or Gigabyte. Msi and Evga is also ok. And like Yassarikhan says, you need LP ram with the Nh-D14 cooler. Rest of set up is high quality and awesome.

I totally agree with the friendly suggestions above. If you're opting for boards that support multiple full x16 lanes then it will definitely drive your costs up. As yassarikhan786 mentioned, there's not a major difference that you'll feel in performance even if you have multiple video cards in the future. Yup, you'll need to exchange the regular Vengeance with the low profile versions in order to be compatible with the NH-D14.

I'm going to be throwing some money into getting a 2500K and a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H. It seems a well featured mobo, with some nice looking heat sinks and a nice black pcb. Worth a look for your build too I think

if your going for a UD board, spend the extra few quid/dollars/yen or whatever and get the GA-Z68XP-UD4.....its a bit more efficiant and with more features

Ok quick update - you guys have sort of shown me the light. I think all those specs and features of the Extreme7 clouded my judgement. I have only had one ASRock experience a very long time ago and it wasn't a pleasant one. MSI, for me, is the exact opposite. I decided to go with the more established company and the MSI Z68A-GD80 (G3) and have decided to swap out the SOC 570 for the Classified version. Other than that, the rest of it is the same. The only sucky part is waiting for parts to restock so I can buy them!

Cool. So you're set to go
smile.gif
. Now you just have to wait, which can be excruciating. Are you buying everything from one place?

Yes I am. Unfortunately I'm too impatient to go ordering from all sorts of random places. I'm lazy so I like it to all be at one store/website. Plus living in Tampa, FL there aren't even any good stores that stock quality parts within 2hrs of me

The wait is already excruciating!! It started from the second I made up my mind 100% about parts. Now I just keep checking the website like twice a day to see if the parts are back in stock! Hahaha

Hahaha, I was too impatient and ordered from a number of places to get my parts asap. I guess it's better buying from one vendor as you would be saving on delivery costs.

$34 for rush processing and 2-day shipping to Florida! I might be able to have the parts here by late this week and be folding and gaming by this time next weekend!
