AMD’s Virtual Overclocking Event hosted by Overclock3D

A few weeks back AMD contacted us and asked if we would be willing to be the host of their UK Virtual Overclocking Event. Naturally we were honoured and accepted their invitation.

Our first task as event holders was to pick a total of 5 people from the Overclock3D forums that we believed would be capable of overclocking AMD based systems to extreme levels . The decision was an extremely tough one, but in the end we put forward the following people:

Ham

BustaH

tinytomlogan

Jabski

Pyr0

Each of these entrants has received (or shortly will be receiving) the following test systems to benchmark with:

• AMD Phenom II X4 940 CPU

• Asus Mainboard with 790 chipset

• Asus Radeon HD 4870X2 GPU

• OCZ Reaper HPC PC2-9200 4GB

The entrant who manages to achieve the highest result in 3DMark06 (stock settings) using the hardware above along with nothing more than AIR COOLING (200CFM Delta’s here we come!) will be announced as the winner on the 16th August @ 12pm and will receive a super-special limited edition Phenom II Black Edition TWKR for their efforts.

This thread will serve as a communal place for all entrants to share their overclocking progress with the community. Regular updates with photo’s, screenshots and video’s is a must, and we’re relying on the rest of you guys to cheer our entrants on :)

Let the games begin….

Before anything else, I just wanted to say a HUGE thanks to OC3D and AMD for letting me participate in this event.

Although I'm using a 4870X2 in my main rig, I've been away from AMD systems for a while... so may be playing catchup with the others as I try to learn to overclock again lol (any tips or advice welcomed). But you can be sure I'll be trying my best.

Took a couple of rly quick snaps (was very eager to begin playing :p ) before starting the abuse:

I thought I'd start with a few benchmarks at stock speeds to get a baseline and then see how scores/performance improve as clocks are increased.

nice one for putting up those pics, I was going to do the same however you have covered it all there, nice set up btw and benchtable:)

I had a quick play with mine, its an interesting set up and so far I have found it to be very stable to a point.

thanks to oc3d for putting this comp on.

Hi Busta :wavey:

Thanks for the compliment.

Please, post your pics as well, mine are only quick snaps. Could be interesting just to see everyone's setup too:)

Yeah, my inital thoughts have been, stable, easy to setup, fairly cool running (till I turn up the volts), and easy to overclock

Absolutely loving the unlocked multipliers of the Phenom II 940 . I've never had a CPU with unlocked multis before, so I'm just enjoying the freedom to OC without having to push the FSB yet (and getting mixed up in chipset/bus voltages - so far).

Good luck to all entrants..... Just gutted I couldn't commit the time to partake!

Do OC3D proud and rack up some serious scores!

TWKR is an amazing prize by the way. I can't help thinking that after AMD have run all their compo's, that a few of these will end up on the Bay sadly :(

Let battle commence!

Lol, my set up is the opposite to pc pron, more like the ghetto in the ghetto. I know for one that tinytom would be appalled [bling freak]:D

I'll get some pics up soon. btw my set up does not like Vantage [cpu tests] Im hoping its going to be ok with 3d06.

btw pyro dont get too good.:p

Grats you five :D And AMD you rock, picking oc3d :D

*returns to ACAD to work like a maniac on that bench table he had been working on for a while*

haha, i love ghetto setups, i prefer function over style :D

plus i don't have much spare cash and i'm a tight arse :p

i've not encountered any problems with the 3dm vantage tests so far, but maybe i haven't pushed it like you yet *shrug*

haha, i'll try not to :haha:

i should be in bed, i haven't slept yet...

Thanks Jim :)

lol, yeah

wish i had air conditioning here

the asus tri fan 4870X2 is great. a huge improvement over the original stock design.

it's much cooler and a little quieter as well

the old ocz psu i have doesn't have an 8pin pci-e plug tho and only 2x 6pin pci-e, so i'm having to use both of the included adapters and just hope that doesn't affect clocks

Looking good Pyr0. That ASUS 4870x2 looks immense. I'm sure you'll all have some fun clocking that kit.

I think whoever really wants to win should use one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/240v-MB50-500...nQ5fHearingQ5fCoolingQ5fAirQQsalenotsupported

:p

Damn you just exposed my secret weapon.:(

btw, maybe it would be an idea for someone to put up a sample screen shot of whats required for validation. obviously if its all on air then coretemp or equivelent needs to be open ?

I suggest 3d06 open with score and details window/ cpuz/cpuz mem/cpuz motherboard/gpuz x1 and coretemp open. any other suggestions?

Best of luck to all those involved. Some talented guyz, some great kit (middle of summer *cough* :p)

Awesome stage from OC3D & AMD.

How about some stock clock screenies, just to whet the appetite (be sure every1's kit is running ok) :p

hmmm, that is a good point

i've been taking screenshots with cpu-z and gpu-z as per hwbot, but only used coretemp when running prime95

if we have to include coretemp in all screenies, i'll have to re-run everything again, lol

congrats guys for getting the chance to play with some extreme hardware,

i'am so jealous right now oh well time to see if i can oc my q9450 past my previous best of 4.4ghz, and also congrats to oc3d for the chance to host the event.

Best of luck all! :D

Phenom II's are a bag of fun to overclock and unlike most LGA775 rigs I've played with, I've been able to mess around with a larger variety of settings that gave way to some very interesting gains, especially when core clockspeed is not the only factor that'll seal the deal here. If you start to feel as though you're hitting a clockspeed wall upwards of 3.6-3.8GHz, keep scavanging the BIOS as it will go a little further than that! ;)

Yep agreed. Although its probably not massively important at this stage (as you've got a month to get your best scores in) the final results will need temperature readings on the screenshots along with full validation of other results.

For the moment though, just have fun getting used to the kit, post some screenies, piccies and vids of your setups and see if you can get any interesting results outside of 3D06 too.

I for one am REALLY interested in how these setups perform.

Pretty good comp!! Congrats on getting it OC3D and congrats to the guys competeing :) its a pretty damn impressive prize! haha

you all get to keep the parts youve been sent too? or you have to return those :(
