AMD's RX 580 is giving Nvidia's premium GTX 1650 GPUs a run for their money

Yeah I'm a big fan of Polaris. The 400 series went down well for budget gamers until mining happened, but they are much more affordable now thankfully.

I guess in that price bracket Nvidia's brand recognition drives the sales so well that there's no need to price match the Rx series.

Polaris was and still is a good architecture. My brother still rocks a 480. Does it's job very well for him.

TBH the GTX 1650 has me thinking "It looks like AMD wasn't wrong to keep Polaris on the market for so long". The RX 4/570 had to compete with the GTX 1050 Ti and now the GTX 1650. Even then AMD is still doing quite well competitively.

It's just a shame that AMD can't do as well in other segments of the market. They need to release Navi soon and Navi needs to do well. I don't want to wait for Intel to have a fully competitive GPU market again.

All their money went to Zen. So it'll take a few more years probably before they are able to finally get around to giving their GPU branch more R&D.

Yep, it's a massive shame, according to Steam's hardware survey:
RX 570: 0.34% market share
GTX1050Ti: 9.68%

I've just realised the price disparity here is so large that you could technically maybe get a cooler(Temperature wise rather than thermal energy) GPU with an RX570 than a GTX1650 when you price match them since it seems like we're comparing dinky single fan cards against the higher end fat dual fans in that comparison.

That's why it is encouraging to see AMD's R&D expenses go up every quarter. Now that Zen is giving them decent revenue, AMD now has the funds to do things a little better.

Even so, the development timeframe for new silicon is looong. It will take ages before we see the full impact of it all. Next-gen consoles will pump a lot of extra money into AMD's GPU division, especially now that Semi-Custom is now merged with RTG.

TBH, I see AMD having ray tracing in an upcoming architecture, perhaps not lower-end PC Navi but at least in their later Navi or next-gen parts. I don't see MS going so heavy into DXR's development if they didn't have plans to use it in a console or across a wider range of PC hardware.

Yeah AMD played Zen super smart in retrospect. It has already forced Intel to improve their offerings, would be awesome to see that happening to Nvidia as well in a less pedestrian segment.

Nvidia is a standard that AMD are constantly competing against. Nvidia have made some interesting choices in the mid and low end GPU space where they have competition and like you say, its brand recognition, its the reason Asus is so expensive. You look at any performance charts and you will see Asus near the top in the majority of benchmarks. Thing is £200 for 5-10fps is value in some peoples eyes. I have a Palit 1070 and I can guarantee that the extra £200 I could have spent on an Asus wont put me back a year or 2 from upgrading, the only reason you should spend the extra in reality.

slightly off topic there.... Lets hope that its not a couple of years for AMD to start coming back or if it is then it needs to be something spectacular. Intel have slated a 2020 release to get into the dedicated GPU market and Nvidia are likely to be looking into smaller nodes in the v near future (Turing on IBM's 5nm anyone?).

Agreed. Ray Tracing in next-gen will be limited. Like we are now with Nvidia. I suspect the 'pro 5' or whatever they call it will be where we really see the benefit.

TBH, if Microsoft doesn't make an official path-traced version of Minecraft using DirectX 12 they are really missing something. Assuming that they will have some form of ray tracing acceleration.

There is the path traced version on the old Java build, but it is very limited ATM due to API restrictions etc and other inefficiencies. Seems like the perfect demo if light ray tracing is a target for next-gen.

From what I recall AMD had plenty of money. RTG just spunked the lot up the wall playing with Fury.

They brought in Raja, who had them on the right track, then he left for Intel.

Raja didn't jump by all indication, seems like he was pushed because he was too focussed on AI from comments from AMD after. But AMD said up until Zen's launch, pretty much all the little money they did have went towards Zen's R&D, RTG has been on a shoestring budget since around 2012(Presumably up until a year or so ago), and most of that budget wasn't going to gaming or multimedia. Fury was expensive to produce but nothing indicates it was too expensive R&D wise.

Oh he was probably totally pushed by the plebnuts in RTG. Sadly that was pre shake up.

You could tell that he was totally unhappy with Vega as well. No pride, unlike Polaris.

They lost a good man there.
